Gorlok Offense Explodes in MacMurray Sweep, 11-0 & 16-1

Box Score The #6 ranked Webster University baseball team swept a doubleheader from MacMurray College (IL), 11-0 and 16-1, on March 29, at GCS Ballpark.  Chris Jansen threw the second straight shutout for Webster in the opener, setting a strikeout record in the process, and the Gorlok offense exploded.

In game one, Jansen (JR, Cicero, IN/St. Joseph's College) struck out 15 Highlanders in the seven-inning shutout, eclipsing the record of 14 Ks by Isaac Behme (JR, Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg HS) in 2012 vs Westminster College.  Seven different Gorlok pitchers struck out 15 in a seven-inning game vs MacMurray in 2011.

Jansen allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out fifteen.  He is now 2-1 on the season.

Webster had a 1-0 lead in the second when Jared Turner (SR, Springfield, IL/Chatham Glenwood HS) doubled to lead off and was followed by a Kevin Kojs (SR, New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way Central HS) home run just over the left field wall to make it 3-0.

The Gorloks broke the game open in the fifth.  Joe Winckel (SR, Bonne Terre, MO/North County HS) doubled, Kojs singled, and a bunt single by Zach Allam (SO, Bloomington, IN/Edgewood HS) loaded the bases.  Matt Wollnik (FR, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) singled in one, and a Corey Lasky (SR, Vernon Hills, IL/Adlai E Stevenson HS) sac fly was dropped by the MacMurray right fielder, as Kojs and Allam scored.  Taylor Stoulp (SR, St. Louis, MO/St. Mary's HS) doubled in Wollnik and Lasky and Webster led 8-0.

Jeff Kammer (JR, Chesterfield, MO/Jefferson) completed the Webster scoring with a two-run home run bomb that hit just below the windows of the GCS Building beyond the left field wall, making it 11-0.  Stoulp, who had walked earlier in the inning, scored ahead of Kammer.

In game two, Kammer would lead off the scoring in the first, hitting a three-run blast to left again, following a Lasky bunt single and a single by Stoulp, giving Webster a 3-0 lead.

The Highlanders would nick starter Dylan Dean Smith (SR, Albion, IL/Edwards County HS) with an unearned run in the second on a dropped pickoff throw to third, but that is all Smith would allow. He went five innings, giving up four hits and two walks, and striking out three.  With the win, Smith improved to 4-0 on the season, and lowered his ERA to 1.89.

The Gorlok offense opened up the flood gates in the third, scoring eight runs.  The inning was highlighted by a Winckel two-run triple and run-scoring doubles by Lasky and Stoulp.  Webster added five more in the fifth, featuring a run-scoring double by Charlie Gandolfi (JR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) and a two-run double by  Ryan Hall (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Eureka HS), giving Webster a 13-1 lead.

Webster would score its final three runs in the sixth, making it 16-1.  The inning featured freshmen Brendan Shields (St. Peters, MO/Ft. Zumwalt East HS) singling in his first at-bat of the season and Brett Jungles (Naperville, IL/St. Francis HS) scoring his second run of the year after being hit by a pitch.

The Gorlok offense pounded out 20 hits for the second time this week, and had 32 hits and 27 runs in fourteen innings on the day.

Stoulp wound up 5-6 on the day, with four RBIs, three runs scored, two doubles, and three walks, and reaching base eight times.  Stoulp is hitting .370 on the season, second to Kojs' .432.  Kammer was 3-8, with two home runs, seven RBIs, and three runs scored.  He leads the team with three home runs and 15 RBIs.  Lasky was 3-6, with four runs, two RBIs, and a double.

Allam, who has taken over the catching duties for Ian Foege (SR, Eureka, MO/Eureka  HS) who was injured in the game vs Blackburn College on March 26, has gone 5-8, with two RBIs, two runs, and a double since filling in.

Freshman C.J. Lee and sophomore Mitch Stefani, both from Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS, pitched 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh innings in game two after taking over for Smith.

Webster is 3-0 in the SLIAC and 11-3 overall on the season.  The Gorloks travel to Jacksonville, IL, on March 30 for a single game vs. the Highlanders to complete the series.  Webster then heads to Carlinville, IL, on April 1 for a doubleheader vs Blackburn.
