Spriggs Complete Game, Gorlok Bats Sink Beavers, 10-4

Box Score The Webster University softball team broke a three-game skid, beating Blackburn College 10-4 at Carlinville, IL, on April 22.  Freshman pitcher Alexis Spriggs went the distance as the Gorloks banged out 11 hits and scored 10 runs.

Spriggs (Scott City, MO/Scott City) went seven innings, allowing four hits and eight walks, giving up one earned run while striking out five.  She won her second game of her first collegiate campaign and is 2-3 on the season.

Webster fell behind 3-0 in the first inning as Blackburn scored three unearned runs as Spriggs walked four.  Catcher Molly Muntz (SR, Streator, IL/Streator HS), a converted outfielder who has done an admirable job in her first season behind the plate, was charged with three passed balls as two runs scored and a Beaver triple plated the final.  Spriggs settled down after the first and the Gorlok offense took over.

The Gorloks tied it up with three in the second on two singles and two walks, with the big blow being a Rachel Franck (SO, McCluer North HS) two-run single.  Franck was 2-5 for the game with four RBIs.  She leads the team with a .451 batting average and is tied for the team lead with 29 RBIs, coming out of the lead off spot.  Webster scored three more in the fourth on three singles and a walk to take a 6-3 lead.  A Kallie Federhofer (JR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) two-run single keyed the rally.

Webster added two more runs in the fifth and two in the seventh.  Erin McGinnis (SO, Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS) was 2-4, with three RBIs, a double, a walk, and a run scored.  Samantha Powers (SR, Manchester, MO/John F. Kennedy HS) was 2-2, with four runs scored and two walks.  Freshman Emily Kolisch (FR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) was on base four times, reaching on a single, walk, and two errors, and scoring three runs and stealing two bases.  Another freshman, Kristin McIntyre (Eureka, MO/Eureka HS) was 2-4 with two runs scored.

The Gorloks are 8-8 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 12-16 overall.  The team travels to Jacksonville, IL, on April 23 for a doubleheader with MacMurray College and finishes up the season in Terre Haute, IN, with a doubleheader at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
