Box Score Extending its wins streak to 11 games, the #4 ranked Webster University baseball team swept a doubleheader at Iowa Wesleyan, 7-2 and 12-10, on April 6 in Mt. Pleasant, IA. Isaac Behme won his third game in the opener, and freshman pitcher C.J. Lee tossed five innings of relief in game two to pick up his second win.
Behme (JR, Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg HS) saw a 21 2/3 shutout innings streak go by the boards with two outs in the seventh inning of game one. Behme was cruising in the contest, allowing just one hit and a walk, and trying to close out his second shutout of the season.
After hitting the leadoff batter to start the seventh, Behme struck out the next two and was one out away before giving up a two-run homer. In the complete game win, Behme gave up two hits, a walk, and struck out 10 in his seven innings of work. He goes to 3-0 on the season and in 27 1/3 innings has allowed only 3 earned runs.
Webster led 1-0, picking up a run in the second, but exploded with a six-run seventh. Max Morohashi (SO, Los Angeles, CA/Campbell Hall), Zach Allam (SO, Bloomington, IN/Edgewood HS), and Matt Wollnik (FR, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) all singled, scoring Jared Turner (SR, Springfield, IL/Chatham Glenwood HS) pinch running for Morohashi.
Corey Lasky (SR, Vernon Hills, IL/Adlai E Stevenson) bunted for a hit, loading the bases. Charlie Gandolfi (JR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) grounded into a force at second to score Allam and Taylor Stoulp (SR, St. Louis, MO/St. Mary's HS) singled in Wollnik to make it 4-0. Joe Winckel (SR, Bonne Terre, MO/North County HS) then unloaded a three-run homer on a 3-2 pitch to make it 7-0 Gorloks.
Lasky wound up 4-4 with a double for the game and Winckel was 2-4, with HR, 3 RBIs, and 2 runs. Gandolfi was 2-4 with an RBI and a run and Morohashi 3-3, with a double.
In game two, Webster went on the offense early. In the first, Gandolfi singled and scored on a Taylor Stoulp single. Jeff Kammer (JR, Chesterfield, MO/Jefferson College) doubled in Taylor. A Winckel single sent Kammer to third and a Morohashi double scored Kammer. Kevin Kojs (SR, New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way Central HS) scored Winckel with a sacrifice fly, making it 4-0 Gorloks.
In the second Wollnik and Gandolfi singled, Gandolfi stealing second. Stoulp doubled in both and Winckel doubled sending Stoulp home, making it 7-0. In the fourth, Brett Buchanan (SR, Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook HS), batting for Gandolfi, doubled and Kammer doubled in Buchanan. Jordan Stoulp (JR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS), pinch-hitting for Winckel, singled in Kammer and Webster led, 9-1.
Zach Schneider (SR, Grayslake, IL/Warren Township HS) started for the Gorloks. Schneider came into the game with a 3-0 record and 0.44 ERA, but the Tigers erupted for seven runs in the fourth against Schneider and two relievers, cutting Webster's lead to 9-8.
Webster padded its lead in the fifth when Brett Jungles (FR, Naperville, IL/St. Francis HS) doubled, Wollnik doubled, and Lasky singled, scoring Jungles. A Buchanan ground out scored Wollnik, making it 11-8 Webster. The Gorloks added another run in the eighth on a Jordan Stoulp double.
C. J. Lee (FR, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS) took over pitching duties for Webster in the fifth and restored order. Lee allowed just two walks and struck out nine over the next four innings. He had a hiccup in the ninth, allowing a leadoff single and a home run to make it 12-10, but set the next three down in order, striking out the final two to raise his five-inning total to 11 and earn the win. In 18 2/3 innings on the season, Lee has allowed just three earned runs and has 25 strikeouts.
Morohashi was 1-2 with a double and RBI. Morohashi is 11-22 on the season, batting .500. Winckel was 2-2, with a double, RBI,and run. Gandolfi was 2-2 with 2 runs and Taylor Stoulp 3-5, with 3 RBIs, 3 runs, and a double. Kammer was 2-5, with 2 RBIs, 2 runs, and 2 doubles, and Jordan Stoulp 2-3, with 2 RBIs.
Webster had 17 hits in the game and 31 on the day. The Gorloks lead the SLIAC with a 9-0 record and the 11 wins has improved their overall record to 17-3.
Webster is home on April 8 with a doubleheader vs. Principia College (IL) at GCS Ballpark. The Gorloks host Greenville College on April 11 for a single game.
