Men's Soccer Loses Opener of Sal Vaccaro Tournament

Box Score The Webster University men's soccer team lost to Grinnell College, 2-0, in the opening round of the Sal Vaccaro Tournament in Naperville, IL, on September 13.  The Gorlok offense remained in a funk as the team was shutout for a third straight contest.

Neither team created much offense in the first half of the game as there were only three shots total and no saves.  The Pioneers had five corner kicks to the Gorloks' one for the half, but were unable to create any serious scoring opportunities with the advantage.  Grinnell did break on top at the 50:36 mark in the second half to take a 1-0 lead.  Webster could only muster two shots in the half and challenged the Pioneer keeper with only one save.  Grinnell added an insurance goal at 87:37 to ice the contest.  Ian McReynolds (SR, Florissant, MO/McCluer North HS) took the loss in goal for Webster, as his season mark fell to 2-2.

Webster will now face host North Central College in the third place game on September 14.  North Central, who is ranked seventh in the Central Region, lost to Penn. State-Behrend, 2-1, in the other first round match-up.  The Gorloks are back home on September 18, to face Washington University at the Soccer Park.  The Bears were ranked 16th in the pre-season polls and have fallen out of the top 25, but are still ranked fourth in the Central Region.  Washington U. beat SLIAC rival Greenville, 2-0, on September 10 on a pair of penalty kicks.
