Box Score The Webster University men's soccer team took a halftime lead but lost to Washington University, 2-1, on September 18, at the Soccer Park. The Bears, ranked fourth in the NCAA III Central Region, managed only shot in the first half, but came alive in the second to take the victory.
The Bears scored two unanswered goals, on six shots, in the second half. Washington U. tied the game at 41:29 as Webster goalkeeper Ian McReynolds (SR, Florissant, MO/McCluer North HS) got beat on a blast by a Bear forward on a deflection off a Gorlok defender.
Washington U. scored its second goal on a free kick after a foul and a yellow card was given to senior Kris Brown (Wentzville, MO/Holt HS) just outside the Webster penalty box. The Bear shot deflected off a player in the Gorlok wall, and past McReynolds to give Washington U. a 2-1 lead and the final goal of the contest.
The Gorloks opened the scoring as Taylor Overstreet (SR, Florissant, MO/McCluer North HS) scored at 38:22 of the first half. Overstreet corralled a throw in that deflected off Mike Wells (SR, Wentzville, MO/Holt HS) near the penalty spot, and poked it by the Bear keeper. The shot bounced off the goalpost and into the net.
The goal was Overstreet's first tally in two years, when he scored three goals his sophomore season. Webster's next best chance to score came with 5:10 remaining in the first half as a Nermin Hajrizi (SO, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville HS) head ball off a Tyler Thomas (Triad, MO/Triad HS) cross was deflected by the Bear goalkeeper before it headed in the net.
For the game, Webster outshot Washington U., 8-7, but the Bears had numerous more chances off corner kicks, booting nine to the Gorloks' two.
Webster falls to 2-5-1 with the loss. The Gorloks will host Millsaps College (MS) on September 21 at the Soccer Park. Webster is back home on September 23 as Illinois College visits and the Gorloks complete a four-game home stand with a game vs. Illinois Wesleyan University on September 25.
