Box Score The Webster University men's soccer team took a quick 1-0 lead at Spalding University, but that proved to be its only goal as the Gorloks fell to the Golden Eagles, 2-1, in Louisville, KY, on October 21. Filip Delija staked Webster to a lead just 2:03 into the contest, but Spalding scored the only two goals in the final 88 minutes.
Delija's (FR, Chicago, IL/Stevenson HS) goal was his third of the season, with all three coming in the Gorloks' last two games. The goal was assisted by fellow freshman, Drew Quisenberry (Morton, IL/Morton HS).
Spalding would tie the game at 36:37 to send the game into halftime at 1-1. The Golden Eagles held the edge in shots for the half at 6-3, with Webster goalkeeper Zach Horn (JR, Godfrey, IL/Alton Marquette HS) coming up with three saves.
The Golden Eagles took a 2-1 lead at 64:13 in the second half. After the goal, Webster put on an offensive thrust the remaining 25 minutes. Zach Gyuricza (FR. Chicago, IL/St. Viator HS) got off a couple shots, with Corey Redington (FR, Dardenne Prairie, MO/Ft. Zumwalt West HS) aned Joey Florian (JR, Ballwin, MO/John F. Kennedy HS) taking shots also. Delija fired off a couple late in the game as well, with the Spalding goalkeeper saving one from tying it up, but the Gorloks could not come up with another goal.
Horn finished with five saves, facing 12 shots, and gave up the two goals in taking the loss in the nets. Delija's goal was the 19th scored by a freshman for the season, out of the 30 total scored by the team.
Webster, who came into the contest with wins in four of its last five contests, fell to 4-2-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 5-9-2 overall. With the win, Spalding leap-frogged Webster in the SLIAC standings into third place at 5-2, with Webster in fourth.
Webster is now 6-1 in its brief rivalry with Spalding, with five of the seven games having been decided by one goal.
The Gorloks are back home on October 24 to host Iowa Wesleyan Univesity at the Soccer Park.
