Webster Blitzes Finlandia, 5-2

Box Score Employing a blitzkrieg offense, the Webster University men's soccer team defeated Finlandia University, 5-2, on October 25 at the Soccer Park.  The Gorloks responded to a 1-0 first half deficit with three goals in less than three minutes to take command of the contest.  Once again, the freshman duo of Filip Delija and Zach Gyuricza ignited the Webster offense.

The Lions scored the first goal of the game at 17:13 to take a very short-lived lead.  Just 26 seconds later, Delija (FR, Chicago, IL/Stevenson HS) fired in a pass from Gyuricza (FR, Chicago, IL/St. Viator HS) to tie it up.  It was Delija's seventh goal in the last four games after scoring none in the season's first 13.

Twenty-eight seconds later, it was Gyuricza who scored for the Gorloks.  It was Gyuricza's seventh goal of the year, tying him with Delija for the team lead.  The Gorloks' scoring binge continued at the 20:23 mark when Nermin Hajrizi (SO, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville HS) put Webster up 3-1, on a goal assisted by Jeremy Statman (FR, Austin, TX/McCullum HS).  All four goals were scored in a span of three minutes and 10 seconds.

Just over three minutes into the second half, Brendan Shields (JR, St. Peter's,MO/Ft. Zumwalt East HS) scored off a pass from Drew Quisenberry (FR, Morton, IL/Morton HS) to put Webster up, 4-1, at 48:15.  Finlandia answered that goal with one of its own at 54:55 to cut the lead to 4-2.  Angel Jasso (Killeen, TX/Northeast Texas CC) completed the scoring for Webster at 85:25, set up on a pass from Lucas Wittrock (SO, House Springs, MO/Northwest HS).  It was Jasso's first career goal for the Gorloks.

Alex Bergmann (FR, Wentzville, MO/St. Dominic's HS) got the start in goal for Webster and improved to 6-1 on the season with the win.  Bergmann had two saves in the contest.  The Gorloks outshot the Lions 24-4 in the game.

It was Senior Day and the Gorloks honored their lone senior on this year's squad, Ramon Perez (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West HS) in a ceremony before the game.

Finlandia University, located in Hancock, MI, has been making the rounds of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season.  The Lions finished 2-2 vs. the SLIAC with wins over MacMurray College and Iowa Wesleyan University, and losses to Webster and Fontbonne University.  Finlandia, a member of the Great South Conference, falls to 11-4.

Webster is now 7-9-2 overall.  The Gorloks, currently fourth in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 5-2-1, finish the regular season as they host Greenville College (IL) on October 31 at the Soccer Park.  Greenville is currently tied for first in the SLIAC at 7-0.
