The Webster University women's basketball team got off to a winning start to the 2015-16 season, toppling the Illinois Institute of Technology, 92-30, on November 20 at Grant Gymnasium. The contest was part of the first-round action in the Cavallo Tip-Off. The 92 points scored by Webster was the team's fourth-highest point total in program history.
Webster sprinted to a 19-0 lead in the first five minutes of the contest and finished the first period with a 32-0 lead. Ashley Brooks (SR, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) led the Gorloks with 11 pointts on 5-7 shooting. A change in NCAA college women's basketball for 2015-16 has broken the game down into four 10 minute periods as opposed to two 20 minute halves.
The Gorloks entered the half with a 54-11 lead. Brooks was the team-leader with 11 and two newcomers for Webster each had eight points for the half. Madison Butler, freshman guard from Sigel, IL (Sigel HS) and junior Chelsea Holman (Decherd, TN/Franklin County HS), a transfer from Motlow CC (TN) each had eight.
Webster lead 72-19 after the third period and won by the final score of 92-30..
Holman wound up being the game's leading scorer with 14, hitting four of five three point attempts in the contest. Brooks finished with 13, while three other players had eight points. Another newcomer, transfer Paige Buechele (JR, Lebanon, IL/Lebanon HS/Southwestern Illinois College) had a team-high six rebounds. Webster was 32-62 (51-6%) from the field and 9-18 (50%)from the three-point line for the game.

The Gorloks were looking to rebound from a 10-15 finish in 2014-15, just the team's second losing season in their last six. Illinois Institute of Technology, an NCAA III independent, starts the season 0-2. In the evening's other contest, Spalding University downed Aurora University, 55-51.
The contest marked the debut of Webster's competitive cheeerleading squad, coached by Justin Barton. The 13 member squad, had nine female and two male cheerleaders available for the game, making an impressive debut on the season as well.
Adding to the excitement of the evening, sponsor Raising Cane's had a half court shooting contest for free food, once a week, for a year. Gorlok baseball player Josh Fleming (SO, Columbia, IL/Columbia HS) won a raffle to shoot and banked his second attempt in to win.
Webster will play Aurora in second round action on November 21.
