Winnings its first game in convincing fashion, the Webster University men's basketball team downed Luther College, 81-64, in the first round of the Cavallo Classic at Grant Gym on November 27.
Junior Hunter Ward (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood HS) hit back to back three-pointers to give the Gorloks a 12-6 lead at 16:45 in the first. A bucket by C.J. Moore (JR, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian HS) and three-pointers from Taylor Walton (SR, Okawville, IL/Okawville HS) and Xavier Dortch (JR, Stockton, AL/Faulkner State CC) extended Webster's lead to 20-9.
The Gorloks pulled ahead, 33-16, with 7:00 left in the half. A Ward reverse lay-up, followed by a Ward three-pointer, gave Webster a 43-20 lead with 4:12 left. Webster would take a 47-24 advantage into the locker room at half. Ward had a team-high 13 points and shared the team-lead in rebounds of four with Davian Joseph (JR, Philadelphia, PA/Lewis & Clark CC). The Gorloks shot 17-27 (63%) for the half, including a sizzling 7-12 (58%) from the three-point line.
The Norse opened second half play with a 21-15 run to cut into Webster's lead in the first seven minutes. The Gorloks restored order and extended the lead back to 20 before coasting to victory.
Ward had a team-high 20 points and Dortch finished with 18 for the game. Ward and Joseph finished with eight rebounds each to lead the Gorloks. Ward added a team-high four assists to complete his evening's effort. Walton had nine points and five rebounds on the night.
Webster wound up 28-54 (52%) from the field and 9-18 (50%) from the three-point line.
Webster, 1-2 on the year, faced its third straight Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team to open the season. Luther, located in Decorah, IA, fell to 0-5 with the loss.
The Gorloks will face Rust College (MS) in Cavallo Classic second round action on November 28 at Grant. Luther will take on MacMurray College (IL) in the first game of the afternoon. Webster, the preseason favorite, opens play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on December 2 at Greenville College (IL).
