The Webster University women's soccer team's three-year SLIAC Tournament championship streak was snapped as the Gorloks tied Westminster College, 0-0, but saw the Blue Jays take the crown on penalty kicks. Westminster edged Webster in the penalty kicks, 5-4, to advance to the NCAA III Championships.
In a defensive struggle that looked destined to be scoreless, both teams had limited chances in regulation and overtime to score as the game ended in a 0-0 tie. During the penalty kicks, each team's first four shooters had no problems scoring on Webster's Alisa Coralic and Westminster's Eileen Woolsey, who were flawless in 110 minutes of play in the game. But after the Blue Jays' fifth shooter scored as well and the Gorloks had a miss, Westminster was the new St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer champs.
The first half saw back and forth action with Webster's best chance to score coming on a Jen Laaksonen (FR, St. Louis, MO/Fox HS) shot that was deflected by Woolsey, wide of the goal, and the half ended with no score. Webster outshot Westminster, 6-4, with each team having to make one save.
For the first 25 minutes of play in the second half, most of the play was confined to between the boxes with no real scoring opportunities for either team. Coralic (FR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville HS) had to make a pair of saves with just under 20 minutes left in regulation.
Webster had a series of shots over a three-minute span with 15 minutes to go that resulted in saves and a blocked shot by a defender in the goal box. A shot by Brianna Pagan (SO, St. Louis, MO/Washington HS) with 4:20 remaining required a diving stop by Woolsey to keep the game scoreless. Webster outshot Westminster, 15-11, in regulation, with the Gorloks edging the Blue Jays in shots on goal, 5-4.
The Gorloks had a scramble in front of the Blue Jay goal seconds into the first overtime that resulted in a Webster corner kick. The Gorloks got a shot just wide of the Westminster net off the corner. The Gorloks had two shots to the Blue Jays' one in the first overtime but neither team could break through as the teams headed to a second overtime. Webster had the advantage in the second extra period, keeping pressure in the Westminster half but again couldn't net a goal.
Coralic had the decision in goal for Webster, gaining her third shutout and finishing her freshman campaign 9-1-1 with the tie. Coralic led the SLIAC with a 0.85 goals against average on the season and was second in the conference in wins.
In a previous meeting this season, the Gorloks and Blue Jays had another exciting contest at the Soccer Park. Webster had a come from behind, 2-1 win over Westminster on October 13 at the Soccer Park. The Gorloks scored the tying goal with 15 minutes remaining and netted the winning goal with 1:35 in the contest.
Ashley Mess (SR, St. Louis, MO/Northwest HS), Carolyn Ries (FR, St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh HS), and Elena Bloma (SO, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS) were all named to the 2015 SLIAC All-Tournament Team. Mess was named the SLIAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year (see All-Conference story).
Five seniors played their final games for Webster including Adrianna Carochi (Goodyear, AZ/Agua Fria HS), Sarah Darabcsek (St. Louis, MO/Timberland HS), Ashley Mess, Jessica Mess (St. Louis, MO/Northwest HS), and Lauren Pratt (St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy). Pratt was named to the SLIAC First Team All-Conference Team (see All-Conference story).
The Gorloks had won three straight SLIAC Tournament Championships and have won seven overall. Webster has made 11 NCAA III Championships appearances in the program's 17 year history. Webster finishes the season 13-5-1 overall after going 8-1 in the SLIAC.
