Records Topple As Gorloks Pummel Panthers, 134-115

The Webster University men's basketball team, the coaches' preseason favorite to win the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, opened play with a resounding 134-115 win at Greenville College (IL).  The Gorloks set single game records for points, field goals, field goal percentage, and just missed one for rebounds as they start the 2015-16 SLIAC schedule 1-0.

Just 10 minutes into the game, despite numerous missed layups and turnovers by both teams, 49 points had been scored as Webster led 28-21 in the up tempo contest.  The pace picked up even faster over the final 10 minutes as the Gorloks extended their lead to 61-49 at the half.  The Panthers run and gun offense adopted this season seemed to have suited the Gorloks just fine.

Webster continued to pile up the point total in the second half as several early dunks, two by Hunter Ward (JR, Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood HS) and another by Davian Joseph (JR, Philadelphia, PA/Lewis & Clark CC) led the way to a 71-57 lead just three minutes in.  The Gorloks broke the 100 point mark with just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest.

The Gorloks broke the team record for points with 6:15 left on the clock as they hit the 112 mark on a layup by C.J. Moore (JR, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian HS).  The previous mark of 110 was set in 2005 vs. MacMurray College (IL).  A backwards dunk by Tevin Evans (SR, St. Louis, MO/Chaminade HS) put an exclamation point on the Gorloks final two points as Webster finished with 134.

In addition to the points record, the Gorloks smashed the record for field goals in a game, with the 56 against the Panthers handily surpassing 40 baskets against Concordia Seminary in 2001.  Webster's 68.3% shooting percentage easily topped the 64.8% the team shot in a game vs. MacMurray in 2003.  The Gorloks' 55 rebounds came up short of the team-record 59, but tied for the third highest total in a single game.

Ward led all scorers in the contest with 31 points on 12-18 shooting, and led in rebounds with 13.  Ward was also the leading assist man with six in the game.  Joseph and Evans each had 24 points, as Joseph shot a stellar 10-14 from the field with Evans close behind at 9-15.  Joseph added 11 rebounds on the evening.

Also joining in the scoring parade were Moore with 17, and Jonathan Odjo (JR, West Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast HS) with 16.  Moore shot a healthy 8-13 in the game and Odjo was a perfect 7-7 from the field.

Greenville, with the new offense that has resulted in a per game average of 115 points, fell to 1-6 as they have given up 123 points per game in the transition.  Webster is now 2-3 overall with the win.

Webster hits the road again on December 5, travelling to Elsah, IL, to play Principia College.  The Gorloks will play at Washington University on December 9, continuing their battle of Big Bend.
