The Webster University women's basketball team defeated Rust College (MS), 67-62, on December 30 at Grant Gymnasium. The victory snapped a three-game skid for the Gorloks. Webster grabbed an early 12-point lead in the contest, held it at the half, but had to battle to hang on for the win.
The Goroks took a 21-9 first period lead, paced by Ashley Brooks' (SR, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) nine points and Taylor Lucas' (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) five points and three rebounds. Brooks came off the bench for the Gorloks as Webster coach Jordan Olufson utilizing his roster, with 12 players seing action in the frame. Webster maintained its 12-point lead in the second period, heading into the locker room up 35-23 at the half.
The Bearcats had closed to within two, 42-40, at 2:30 in the third period when the Gorloks' Megan Brandt (FR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) hit a three-pointer from the corner. Brandt was fouled and completed the four-point play to put Webster up by six and the Gorloks would end the third period up by eight, 53-45. Webster would hang of in the fourth period for the 67-62 final.
Taylor Lucas finished with a team-high 13 points on 6-9 shooting, followed by Brooks with 11. Brandt broke double figures with 10 points on the evening. Aley Lucas (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) led Webster with seven rebounds.
Webster shot 40% in the contest despite going 3-20 from the three-point line. Fourteen players wound up seeing action for Webster, with 11 breaking into the scoring column.
Webster, now 4-5 on the season, was back in action after a 10-day break, last playing in sunny Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The team will resume play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference when it travels to Carlinville, IL, on January 2 to face Blackburn College.
