Box Score The Webster University baseball team finished its first Southern swing with a 5-2 loss to Millsaps College (MS). The Gorloks fell behind early, and couldn't take advantage of three Majors errors to mount a comeback.
Webster scored a run in the top of the first inning when Alec Bahnick (SO, Owensboro, KY/Owensboro Catholic) singled, Charlie Gandolfi (SR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) sacrificed him to third, and Blake Thomas (JR, Troy, IL/Triad HS) scored Bahnick, putting the Gorloks up, 1-0.
The Majors took the lead in the third inning after reaching starter Isaac Behme (SR, Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg HS) for a double and three singles for two runs, and a walk forced in a third. Millsaps added another run on a sac fly in the fifth, after advancing a leadoff double to third, making it 4-1.
The Gorloks had a scoring chance in the sixth when Kyle Uhrich (SO, St. Louis, MO/Maryville University) reached on an error and Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) singled. But a double play ended the rally.
In the Webster eighth, Thomas doubled, advanced on a fly out, and scored on a groundout by Kammer, making it 4-2. The Majors got that run right back in the bottom half of the inning, with a single and double off reliever Trey Tigart (SO, Sikeston, MO/Sikeston HS).
Tigart had entered the game in the seventh, when the Gorloks employed four pitchers to snuff a Millsaps rally. Jack Bensinger (SR, Los Angeles, CA/Campbell Hall) had replaced Behme with one out and walked two. Zach Schneider (SR, Grayslake, IL/Warren Township HS) relieved Bensinger and retired his only batter. Tigart ended the jam by coaxing a fly out to end the inning.
Behme went 6 1/3 innings, allowed seven hits, four runs, two walks, and struck out one in taking the loss. Tigart went 1 1/3 innings, allowing two hits, a run, and striking out one.
Matt Wollnik (SO, Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley HS) was 2-3 and Bahnick 1-5, with a double and run scored. Kammer was 1-4, with an RBI and Ty Hoffhines (JR, Depew, NY/Lancaster HS) was 1-4 also. Thomas finished 1-3, with an RBI and run scored.
Webster is scheduled to host three teams in a round robin at GCS Ballpark on February 27-March 1. The Gorloks will play Wheaton College (IL) and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on February 27, and North Park University (IL) on February 28 and March 1. Seven games total will be played over the three-day weekend.
On March 8-14, the Gorloks will head back south, spending Spring Break week in Florida and playing six games.
