Softball Salvages Split With 12-4 Win Over Huntingdon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team opened the 2015 in Jackson, MS, with a split, on February 28.  The Gorloks lost to host Millsaps College, 9-5, in the opener, and then pounded Huntingdon College (AL), 12-4, in five innings in the day's finale.

Against Huntingdon, the Gorlok offense exploded with four runs in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth, and five in the fifth.  Webster banged out 14 hits and had three players with three or more RBIs in the game.

Junior Erin McGinnis (Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS) was in the middle of all four scoring innings, going 3-4, with three runs and an RBI.  Freshman Tessa Johanning (Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) had the big hit in the Gorloks' four-run first, doubling home two, and wound up with four RBIs for the game.

Freshman Kate Wylie (Webster Groves, MO/Webster Groves HS) was 1-4 with three RBIs.  Transfer Kaylyn DeCock (Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf HS) was 2-3, with two runs scored and a walk.  Another transfer, Kaitlin Kinne (Paducah, KY/Heath HS) was 1-3 with three RBIs and a walk.

Starting pitcher Alexis Spriggs (SO, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) had the complete game win, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out three.  Spriggs was sailing along, having pitched four shutout innings, before allowing four runs in the final frame.

In the 9-5 loss to Millsaps, the Gorloks took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.  After a single by freshman Chloe Costa (Frisco, TX/Frisco HS) and a walk to transfer Laura Zeegers (JR, Oviedo, FL/Leon, HS), a pair of errors by the Majors brought both around.

Millsaps scored a single run off Webster starter Johanning in the second, and three more in the third on three singles and two walks, to take a 4-2 lead.  The Majors padded their lead to 7-2 in the fourth.  After a leadoff a single and a double, Johanning retired the next two batters before issuing three consecutive walks, the last forcing in the second run.  Costa came on in relief, and after a Gorlok error allowed the third run of the inning, recorded the final out.

Webster made it 7-4 in the top of the fifth.  Alyssa Sapp (JR, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS) singled with one out, Zeegers reached on an error, and McGinnis singled to load the bases.  DeCock doubled home Sapp and McGinnis.

Millsaps added two runs in its half of the fifth to make it 9-4, and Webster added a final run in the sixth for the 9-5 final.  Johanning took the loss, going 3 2/3 innings and allowing six runs.  Costa went 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs.

For the game, McGinnis was 3-4, DeCock 1-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Costa was 2-4 with a run scored.  McGinnis was 6-8 for the afternoon and DeCock was 3-7.  Webster had seven players make their debuts for the Gorloks in the doubleheader.

The Gorloks face the same two teams on March 1 before heading home.  Webster will begin a five-day, eight game stretch on March 6 at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, FL.  The Gorloks will play eight different teams on the trip including preseason ranked #6 Trine University (IN) and SUNY-Oneonta.
