Softball Loses Pair At Spalding to Open SLIAC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team travelled to Louisville, KY, on March 22 to open play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, dropping a pair of games to Spalding University, 6-4 and 14-6 in five innings.
 
In the opener, Spalding took 3-0 lead in the third on three consecutive singles and a double off Webster starter Tessa Johanning  (FR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS), but the Gorloks made it 3-2 in the top of the fourth.  Alyssa Sapp (JR, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS) led off with a single.
 
After Sapp took third on a groundout, Kaylyn DeCock (JR, Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf HS) singled her home.  DeCock advanced on a groundout and Kaitlin Kinne (JR, Paducah, KY/Heath HS) singled her home.
 
Spalding scored three more runs in the fifth to go up 6-2, but the Gorloks cut the lead in half with two runs in the sixth.  Sapp singled and Laura Zeegers (JR, Oviedo, FL/Leon HS) walked.  After a DeCock fly out moved the runners up, Johanning singled in two runs to make it 6-4.  Webster had runners at first and second with one out in the seventh, but couldn't push any more runs across.
 
Sapp was 2-4, with two runs scored, DeCock was 1-2, with an RBI and run scored, and Johanning was 1-3 with two RBIs.  Johanning went the distance, giving up 10 hits, six runs, two walks, and striking out one in six innings.  She took the loss and is 0-4 on the year.
 
In game two, Spalding jumped to a 12-2 lead after three innings.  The Gorloks cut the lead to 12-6 with a four-spot in the fourth.  Allison Stabenow (JR, Granite City, IL/Granite City HS), Emily Kolisch (SO, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy), Sapp, and Kristin McIntyre (SO, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS) had consecutive singles to score two.  With two outs in the inning, Johanning singled in two more.
 
The Golden Eagles would score two more in the fifth to end the game under the 10-run rule.   Alexis Spriggs (SO, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) started on the mound for Webster, and went two innings, giving up five hits and five runs.  Spriggs took the loss and is 1-3 on the season.
 
Sapp went 3-4, with two RBIs and a run scored, and Kinne was 3-3 with a run.  Johanning was 1-3 with two RBIs and Stabenow was 2-2 with two runs scored and reached on a hit by pitch.  Kolisch was 2-3 with an RBI and run scored.
 
Webster is 0-2 in the SLIAC and 2-13 overall on the season.  The Gorloks host Fontbonne University on March 25 at Blackburn Park for a double header and Iowa Wesleyan College on March 27 for two as well.
