Gorloks Get First SLIAC Win In Split With Tigers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team won its first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest, downing Iowa Wesleyan 14-6 in six innings in the opener, before being nipped in the nightcap, 4-3.  The Gorlok 'home' games took place on Principia College's campus in Elsah, IL, on March 27, being moved there because of poor field conditions at Blackburn Park.

In the opener, Webster fell behind 6-4 in the second inning before scoring 10 straight runs to secure the 14-6 win.  The 14 runs was a season high for the Gorloks.  Highlighting the Webster onslaught was Kaitlyn Kinne (JR, Paducah, KY/Heath HS, going 3-4 with two doubles and six RBIs.  Freshman Katlyn Garza (O;Fallon, MO/Ft Zumwalt North HS) was 4-4 with three RBIs and Laura Zeegers (JR, Oviedo, FL/Leon HS) was 2-3, with a three-run homer.  Kaylyn DeCock (JR, Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf HS) was 3-5 with two RBIs.

Freshman Tessa Johanning (Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) went the distance on the mound, going seven innings and giving up four runs, for her first collegiate win.

The Gorloks had a 3-2 lead entering the seventh inning in the nightcap and were poised for a sweep, but the Tigers were able to steal the game with two unanswered runs in the top of the seventh.  Webster had another good pitching performance in the game as Alexis Spriggs (SO, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) started for the Gorloks, going four innings and giving up two unearned runs.  Chloe Costa (FR, Frisco, TX/Frisco HS) relieved Spriggs and was on the mound when the Tigers scored two unearned runs in the seventh to take the lead.

Zeegers was 2-4 with a double and an RBI.  She just missed a home run to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, doubling off the top of the outfield wall, but was left stranded at third with the tying run.  Zeegers leads the Gorloks with 18 RBIs on the season.  Kinne was 1-3 with an RBI and Emily Kolisch (SO, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) was 1-2 with a double.

With the game one win, Webster broke a six game losing streak.  The Gorloks are now 1-3 in the SLIAC and 3-14 overall on the season.  Webster will host Fontbonne University, on March 31, for a make double header at Blackburn Park.  The Gorloks then host Blackburn College for a double header on April 1.
