Box Score 2 The Webster University baseball team had a rare afternoon, losing a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference double header, 6-4 and 4-3, at Spalding University on March 28 in Louisville, KY. The losses marked the first time since 2003 the Gorloks had dropped a double header in the SLIAC.
Webster took a 1-0 lead in game one on a steal of home by Charlie Gandolfi (SR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) in the first inning. Spalding scored two in its bottom half to take a 2-1 lead. The Gorloks grabbed the lead right back in the second inning.
Dylan Rajkovich (JR, Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg HS) was hit by a pitch and Alex Bahnick (SO, Owensboro, KY/Owensboro Catholic HS) singled. Matt Wollnik (SO, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) reached on an error to load the bases. With one out, Rajkovich scored on a Mike Golich (FR, Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) ground out with Bahnick taking third. Bahnick swiped home to give Webster a 3-2 lead.
Spalding scored in its half of the second to tie it back up, at 3-3, then led off the fifth with three consecutive singles off starter Isaac Behme (SR, Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg HS) to take a 4-3 lead. Dylan Dean Smith (SR,Albion, IL/Edwards County HS) relieved Behme. A passed ball moved the runners over to second and third with none out. Smith struck out the first batter and got an infield popup for two outs, but a single scored two more to give the Golden Eagles a 6-3 lead.
The Gorloks added another run in the sixth when Rajkovich hit his third home run of the year, a solo shot, to make it 6-4. Webster had one more chance in the seventh inning. (In SLIAC double headers, game one is set for seven innings and game two for nine.)
Golich and Gandolfi singled with one out, and Blake Thomas (JR, Troy, IL/Triad HS) reached on an error to load the bases. Kyle Uhrich (JR, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS) popped up to first and Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) grounded out to end the threat.
Rajkovich was 2-2, with a home run and RBI, a run scored and HBP. Bahnick finished 2-3, with a stolen base and run scored. Gandolfi was 2-3 with a double and run scored.
Behme took the loss and is 2-2 on the season. In four innings he gave up seven hits, six runs, five earned, walked three and struck out four. Smith went two innings, giving up three hits and struck out two.
C.J. Lee (SO, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS) started game two on the mound. The Golden Eagles reached Lee for two runs in the first. Spalding had three singles and a double. Spalding picked up an unearned run in the fourth to go up 3-0.
The Gorloks were held to one infield hit, by Golich, through five innings. Golich doubled in the seventh and Uhrich singled him home to cut the deficit to 3-1. Uhrich was then temporarily the Gorloks' hero in the ninth.
Golich reached on an error with one out. Jake Celleghin (JR, Westfield, IN/Westfield HS) pinch hit for Gandolfi and walked. Thomas grounded out, moving Golich and Celleghin to second and third. With two outs, Uhrich doubled both home to tie the game, 3-3.
Trey Tigart (SO, Sikeston, MO/Sikeston HS) relieved Lee and had pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth innings. In the ninth, Tigart struck out the first two batters, but gave up a tow-out triple. A Spalding grounder to third resulted in an error, allowing the winning run to score.
Lee went six innings, giving up four hits, three runs, two earned, walked five and struck out eight. Tigart went two and 2/3 innings, gave up three hits, the one unearned run, and struck out three, while taking the loss.
Uhrich was 2-3 with three RBIs and a double, and Golich was 2-4, with a double and two runs scored.
It was the first time Webster lost two straight in the SLIAC since 2012, and the first time they dropped a SLIAC double header since April 19, 2003, vs. Maryville University. Webster is 2-3 in the SLIAC and 10-7 overall.
The Gorloks have a rescheduled double header on March 30, vs. Concordia University-Chicago, at GCS Ballpark. Webster has a single game at Washington University on March 31.
