Gorloks Paw Bears, 17-9

Box Score The Webster University baseball team bats, held to 12 runs over its last four games, broke out in a big way in a 17-9 win at Washington University on March 31, in Clayton, MO.  The Gorloks piled up 24 hits in the game, including nine hits in an eight-run seventh inning.  Six Gorloks had three or more hits on the afternoon.

Webster had a 9-7 lead in a see-saw game before exploding in the seventh.  Kyle Uhrich, Charlie Gandolfi, Zach Allam, Matt Wollnik, Mike Golich, Alec Bahnick, Blake Thomas, and Uhrich, for a second time, all had RBI singles in the frame.  Webster sent 13 batters to the plate against three Washington pitchers.

Washington U had taken a 3-0 lead in the first, knocking out starter Zach Schneider (SR, Grayslake, IL/Warren Township HS) with a single and two walks.  Johnny Lord (SO, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) was called on to relieve Schneider.  Webster and Washington would trade runs in the second inning, giving the Bears a 4-1 lead before Webster rallied in the third.

Bahnick (SO, Owensboro, KY/Owensboro Catholic HS) singled and Thomas (JR, Troy, IL/Triad HS) walked.  Uhrich (St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS) doubled in Bahnick.  An errant pickoff throw by the Washington U pitcher scored Thomas.  Dylan Rajkovich (JR, Orland Park, Il\L/Carl Sandburg HS) singled in Uhrich to make it 4-4.  Webster picked up two mored runs in the fourth, with a Thomas double being the big hit in the inning, to take a 6-4 lead

The Bears would score two runs off Lord in their half of the fourth to tie it up, 6-6, before Joe Elfrink (SO, Leopold, MO/Leopold HS) was called on to end the inning.  Elfrink was relieved after hitting a batter with two outs in the fifth and Dylan Dean Smith (SR, Albion, IL/Edwards County HS) was summoned to get the Gorloks out of the inning.

Webster would take the lead for good in the top of the sixth.  A single by Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) and a triple by Rajkovich scored one, and an error on an Allam (JR, Bloomington, IN/Edgewood HS) grounder to short and a double by Wollnik made it 9-6 Webster.  Then came the fireworks in the seventh to seal the win.

Smith would wind up the winner, going 1 1/3 innings, giving up a hit and a run.  He is 3-2 on the season.  Elfrink went one inning, just giving up a walk and a hit batter.  Lord went 3 2/3 innings, giving up 10 hits and three runs.  Uhrich came on to pitch the seventh and eighth innings for Webster, giving up a walk and a hit, and two unearned runs.  Trey Tigart (SO, Sikeston, MO/Sikeston HS) pitched a scoreless ninth. 

Wollnik (SO, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) wound up 5-5, with three RBIs and reached on a walk.  Uhrich was 3-7, with three RBIs, three runs, and a double.  Thomas was 3-6, with two doubles, two RBIs, and three runs scored.  Bahnick was 4-7 with an RBI and run scored and Rajkovich was 3-3, with three RBIs, two runs, two HBPs, and a walk.

For Schneider, it was his first start in 2015.  He was 4-1 with a 3.02 ERA in six starts in 2014.

Webster, who had broken a three-game skid with 1-0 win over Concordia their previous contest, is 12-8 overall on the season.  Washington U entered into the game15-5, and receiving votes in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball poll.  The Gorloks and Bears have battled over the last seven seasons, going 9-9 against each other coming into the contest.

The Gorloks host Westminster College for a single game on April 3 at GCS Ballpark, then travel to Fulton, MO, on April 4 for a doubleheader vs. the Blue Jays.
