Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team lost a twinbill to league-leading Fontbonne University, 14-0 (5 innings) and 4-2, on March 31 at Blackburn Park. The Griffins, who lead the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 4-0, ran away with game one, but the Gorloks battled for the upset in the nightcap.
In the 4-2 loss in game two, Fontbonne took a quick 2-0 lead after a leadoff walk and a double, and two groundouts each scored a run in the first. The Gorloks came right back with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Alyssa Sapp (JR, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS) beat out a bunt single and Laura Zeegers (JR, Oviedo, FL/Leon HS) was hit by a pitch with one out. With two down, Tessa Johanning (FR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) doubled them both home.
Fontbonne would score single runs in the fourth and fifth and finished the contest with just five hits, but received five walks. Webster could only muster one more hit and a walk over the final six innings. Alexis Spriggs (SO, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) started and pitched four innings, giving up four hits, three walks, and three runs. Paige Prather (JR, Evansville, IN/Central HS) pitched the last three innings, giving up just one run on one hit and three walks, and striking out two.
In the opener, the Griffins jumped out to a 4-0 lead off Webster starter Johanning in the first inning, the big hit being a three-run homer. In a six-run second inning for the Griffins, a two-out error opened the floodgates as all six runs that crossed the plate afterward were unearned as Fontbonne took a 10-0 lead.
Webster wound up with two hits in the five-inning game, both by lead off hitter Alyssa Sapp (JR, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS). Sapp wound up going 3-6 on the evening.
Chelsea Thornley (FR, Clinton, MO/Clinton HS) threw the last two innings for the Gorloks, giving up two hits and three runs. Johanning took the loss, giving up five earned runs in three innings of work.
Webster is now 1-5 in the SLIAC and 3-16 overall. The Gorloks are right back at Blackburn Park on April 1, to host Blackburn College for a doubleheader. Webster travels to Westminster College on April 3 for a doubleheader in Fulton, MO.
