Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team picked up its first win in Florida with an 8-6 win over Transylvania University (KY). The Gorloks had lost earlier, 10-7, in extra innings to a very tough SUNY-Oneonta team. The contests were part of the PFX Games Webster is participating in during spring break in Clermont, FL.
The Gorloks beat Transylvania when the game was called after six innings with Webster leading, because of the facility's 11 p.m. time limit. Transylvania is a member of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
In the win over Transylvania, Paige Prather (JR, Evansville, IN/Central HS) took the mound in the third to pitch four innings of three hit, one earned run, relief to pick up the win. Prather had relieved Alexis Spriggs (SO, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) who pitched the first two innings, giving up five runs to the Pioneers before having to leave the contest with an injury.
Tessa Johanning (FR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) was 3-4 with two RBIs and Emily Kolisch (SO, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) was 1-3 with a double and two RBIs. Laura Zeegers (JR, Oviedo, FL/Leon HS) was 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Kaylyn DeCock (JR, Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf HS) was 2-4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored in the win over the Pioneers.
The loss to SUNY-Oneonta was a tough one in many ways. The Red Dragons, a member of the State University of New York Athletic Conference, were 30-11 in 2014 and advanced to NCAA III championships. Oneonta also received votes in the NFCA's first top 25 of the season.
Starting pitcher Chloe Costa (FR, Frisco, TX/Frisco HS) had thrown a gutsy performance through six innings, allowing just four runs on nine hits and no walks, while striking out five. With Webster up 6-4 in the sixth, Oneonta loaded the bases with one out, but Costa ended the threat by coaxing a pop up and ground out to end the inning.
But the Red Dragons scored two in the seventh on a single, double, a bunt single, and a sacrifice fly to tie it up, 6-6. The Gorloks went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. In college softball extra innings, a runner is placed at second base for the batting team. The Oneonta runner stole third, and two singles, a triple, and another single gave the Red Dragons a 10-6 lead.
Webster scored one run on a bunt single by Erin McGinnis (JR, Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS) that scored placed runner Kolisch. But that is all the Gorloks could muster as they fell, 10-7.
The Gorloks were down 2-0 in the third when they put a 5-spot on the Red Dragons. After Costa was hit by a pitch, McGinnis homered to tie the game. Alyssa Sapp (JR, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS) singled and Zeegers reached on an error. DeCock singled in Sapp, making it 3-2, with Zeegers getting caught rounding second.
Freshman Johanning singled, moving DeCock to third. Katlyn Garza (FR, O'Fallon, MO/Ft. Zumwalt North HS) singled in DeCock and Kolisch singled in Johanning to make it 5-2.
With Webster up 5-4, the Gorloks picked up a single run in the fifth on a Garza walk and a Kolisch double, scoring pinch-runner Chelsea Thornley (FR, Clinton, MO/Clinton HS) to make it 6-4.
Costa wound up going eight innings, allowing nine earned runs and 15 hits, and walking none. She had five strikeouts in the game.
McGinnis was 2-5, with a home run and three RBIs. Kolisch finished the game 2-4, with two RBIs and a double, and Costa was 2-3.
The Gorloks, 2-7 on the year, finish play in the PFX Games in Clermont on March 10 with games vs. St. Mary's College (IN) and Heidelberg University (OH).
