Webster Downs #12 Marietta, 5-4

Box Score The Webster University baseball team scored single runs in the 7th, 8th, and 9th, and Dylan Dean Smith pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief as the Gorloks defeated #12 ranked Marietta College (OH), 5-4.  Webster was down 4-2 before mounting its comeback in the game played at Port Charlotte, FL, on March 9.

Isaac Behme (SR, Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg HS) started for the Gorloks and pitched a serviceable 5 1/3 innings of work, allowing seven hits, two earned runs, a walk, and striking out six.

Behme got into a jam in the sixth, with Webster leading 2-1.  After a Gorlok error to lead off the inning, Marrietta had an RBI double, and a sac bunt sent him to third.  After an intentional walk made it runners at first and third, the Pioneer runner at third caught the Gorloks off guard, stealing home to make it 3-2 Marietta.

After another single put runners at the corners again for Marietta, Dylan Dean Smith (SR, Albion, IL/Edwards County HS) was called on in relief.  The first batter Smith faced singled to make it 4-2, Marietta.  Gorlok second baseman Mike Golich (FR, Aurora, IL/Aurora West HS) made a diving catch of a liner for the second out, and a fly ball to center ended the inning without any further damage.

In the seventh, Connor Hogan (SO, New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way West HS) led off with a double and Tyler Hoffhines (JR, Depew, NY/Lafayette HS) singled to put Gorloks at the corners.  After a steal of second by Hoffhines, Dylan Rajkovich (JR, Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg HS) had an RBI pinch single to make it 4-3.

Smith retired the Pioneers in the seventh, and a leadoff double by Blake Thomas (JR, Troy, IL/Triad HS), a wild pitch, and a Hogan sacrifice fly, tied it up, 4-4 in the top of the eighth for the Gorloks.  Marietta touched Smith for a single in the bottom half of the inning, but Webster turned its third double play of the afternoon to end the threat.

Webster regained the lead in the top of the ninth.  Golich had a one-out bloop double down the left field line.   Alec Bahnick walked (SO, Owensboro, KY/Owensboro Catholic HS) and Charlie Gandolfi (SR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) singled to left, scoring Golich with the go-ahead run to make it 5-4.

Trey Tigart (SO, Sikeston, MO/Sikeston HS) was called on for the save in the ninth.  After a fly out, Tigart went 3-0 to the next batter before striking him out on three straight pitches.  After a walk, Tigart retired the final out with a fly to center for the save.
