Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team broke out its bats, and big time, in a doubleheader sweep of Principia College. The Gorloks won 12-0 in the opener, behind an Alexis Spriggs shutout, and came from behind to win 20-9 in the finale on April 10 in Elsah, IL. Both games ended in five innings.
In the Gorloks 12-0 win, Spriggs (SO, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) threw a five-inning shutout, allowing five hits and two walks, while striking out two. Spriggs improved to 3-5 with the win. The Webster offense welcomed back Erin McGinnis (JR, Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS), in her first game back after missing three weeks with an injury. McGinnis was 3-4, with a double, three runs scored, and a walk.
Kaitlyn Kinne (JR, Paducah, KY/Heath HS) was 2-3, with three RBIs and a double. Emily Kolisch (SO,St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Tessaa Johanning (FR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) was 2- 4 with two RBIs.
Webster took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first in game two, but fell behind 8-4 when the Panthers scored eight runs in their half of the inning. The Gorlok defense rested on starter Chloe Costa (FR, Frisco, TX/Frisco HS), with most of the runs unearned. Winning pitcher Paige Prather (JR, Evansville, IL/Central HS) relieved Costa in the first and allowed only one earned run the rest of the game as the Gorloks mounted their comeback.
Prather pitched four and a third innings to earn the victory and is now 3-1 on the season. Webster was down 9-7 after four innings, but a 13-run fifth blew the contest wide open.
Katlyn Garza (FR, O'Fallon, MO/Ft. Zumwalt North HS) provided the big bat, going 1-2, with a grand slam homer, six RBIs, and three walks. Kinne was 1-4 with a three-run homer, three RBIs and three runs scored. Kolisch went a perfect 4-4 with three doubles, three RBIs, and two runs. Laura Zeegers (JR, Oviedo, FL/Leon HS) went 3-5 with three RBIs, and McGinnis finished 3-5 with an RBI. Kolisch was 6-8 and McGinnis 6-9 on the day.
The Gorloks travel to Jacsonville, IL, on April 11 to play MacMurray College in a doubleheader. Webster is back at home on April 15 as the team hosts Greenville College (IL) for a doubleheader at Blackburn Park.
