Box Score 2 Extending its winning streak to eight, the Webster University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Blackburn College, 7-5 and 4-2, on April 11 at GCS Ballpark. The Gorloks have now won six in a row in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and improved to 8-3 in the league.
The Gorloks jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning of game one. Mike Golich (FR, Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) had a bunt single, and Alec Bahnick (SO, Owensboro, KY/Owensboro Catholic HS) followed with a sac bunt. Blake Thomas (JR, Troy, IL/Triad HS) was hit by a pitch and Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) walked to load them up.
A Dylan Rajkovich (JR, Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg HS) single scored two, and Max Fecske (SO, North Hollywood, CA/Glendale HS) singled, scoring Kammer. Matt Wollnik (SO, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) singled Rajkovich home to give the Gorloks a 4-1 lead.
After starter C. J. Lee (SO, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS) gave up two runs in the Beavers' half of the second to make it 4-3, Thomas was hit for a pitch a second time leading off in the Gorloks' half. Kyle Uhrich (SO, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS) followed with an opposite field two-run homer, giving Webster a 6-3 lead.
Lee started for the Gorloks, but after giving a run in the first and the two in the second, was relieved with two on and none out in the third. Dylan Dean Smith (SR, Albion, IL/Edwards County HS) was summoned to put out the fire.
Smith gave up two runs in the fifth, cutting the lead to 6-5, and after getting into another jam in the Beaver's sixth, Trey Tigart (SO, Sikeston, MO/Sikeston HS) got the final out of the frame. The Gorloks added an insurance run in the sixth and Tigart pitched a scoreless seventh. Smith picked up his fifth win and Tigart earned his fourth save.
Lee wound up going two innings, giving up five hits and three runs, while striking out one. Smith went three and 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and two runs, striking out one also. He is 5-2 on the season with the victory. Tigart went one and 1/3, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Rajkovich went 4-4, with two RBIs and a run scored. He raised his season average to a team-high .417. Uhrich was 1-4, with his team-leading ninth home run, and two RBIs. Uhrich also leads the Gorloks with 35 RBIs on the season. Wollnik was 2-4 with an RBI and run, and Thomas was 1-2 with two runs scored.
In game two, the Gorloks trailed 2-1, going into the bottom of the seventh. Blackburn had scored single runs in the fourth and fifth of starter Josh Fleming (FR, Columbia, IL/Columbia HS). Jake Celleghin (JR, Westfield, IN/Westfield HS) reached on a dropped third strike to lead off, and promptly stole second and third base.
Celleghin scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 2-2. Adam Naliwajko (SO, Mt. Prospect, IL/St. Viator HS) walked, Wollnik laid down a sacrifice bunt and Golich doubled Naliwajko home to give Webster a 3-2 lead.
Fleming went eight innings for the win, improving to 3-2. He gave up nine hits, gave up two runs, and struck out seven. Tigart picked up his fifth save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Golich was 2-4, with a double and RBI and Celleghin was 0-3 with three stolen bases, a run scored and a walk. Thomas was 0-1, but reached base three times on walks.
Webster is 18-8 overall and will travel to Jacksonville, IL, on April 12 for a doubleheader at MacMurray College. The Gorloks are home on April 17 to host Washington University for a single game at GCS.
