Box Score 2 The Webster University baseball team made it 10 wins in a row with a doubleheader sweep at MacMurray College, 6-1 and 6-4, on April 12. The Gorloks improved to 10-3 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 20-8 overall. It is the 12th straight season the Gorloks have won 20 or more games.
In game one, Isaac Behme (SR, Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg HS) got the start for Webster and limited the Highlanders to one run over the first five innings, but the Gorloks failed to score themselves. The Gorlok bats would wake up for four runs in the sixth inning to let Webster take charge of the contest.
Mike Golich (FR, Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) singled and Charlie Gandolfi (SR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) reached on a bunt, leaving runners at the corners. Gandolfi stole second and a Blake Thomas (JR, Troy, IL/Triad HS) single scored Golich. Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) then swatted a three-run homer to make it 4-1, Webster.
Behme was sailing along with two outs in the sixth but gave up a walk and a double, prompting a call to the bullpen for Trey Tigart (SO, Sikeston, MO/Sikeston HS). Tigart, who had earned saves in both games of a doubleheader vs. Blackburn College the previous afternoon, retired the first batter he faced on a groundout to end the threat.
The Gorloks added two more runs in the seventh. Golich walked and stole second. Gandolfi walked and Golich swiped third to put runners at first and third. Gandolfi and Golich pulled off a double steal with Golich stealing home, and Gandolfi taking third on an error on the MacMurray catcher. Thomas followed wth a sacrifice fly to score Gandolfi, giving Webster a 6-1 lead.
Tigart would retire the Highlanders in the seventh for his third straight save. Tigart now has six saves on the season, which puts him in second place on Webster's all-time single season high list. Steven Dooley holds the Gorloks record for saves in a single season with seven, set in 2012. Behme improved to 5-2 on the season. He went 5 2/3 innings, giving up four hits, two walks, a run, and struck out six.
Kammer was 2-4, with a home run, three RBIs, and a run scored. Golich was 1-3 with three stolen bases, a walk, and two runs scored. Thomas was 1-3, with two RBIs and a run scored.
In game two, Zach Schneider (SR, Grayslake, IL/Warren Township HS) got the start In Webster's first, Golich led off with a double and a Thomas single brought him home. Thomas would score on a two-out single by Kammer to make it 2-0 Gorloks. After the Highlanders picked up a run in the second, Webster scored two more in the top of the third.
Max Fecske (SO, North Hollywood, CA/Notre Dame HS) walked and Thomas doubled. A Kyle Uhrich (SO, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS) sac fly scored Fecske. Kammer singled Thomas to third, with Webster's ninth hit in three innings, and a Dylan Rajkovich (JR, Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg HS) sac fly scored Thomas to make it 4-1.
After Schneider gave up a pair of one-out walks to MacMurray in the third, he was replaced by Chris Jansen (SR, Cicero, IN/Bishop Chatard HS). After a single, wild pitch, and double scored three, Johnny Lord (SO, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valey HS) relieved Jansen and retired the final batter to end the inning, but the Highlanders had tied it up, 4-4.
Webster regained the lead in the seventh when Fecske doubled and scored on a MacMurray error off the bat of Uhrich, to put the Gorloks up 5-4. The game was halted for 30 minutes at the top of the eighth because of a lightning delay. When they resumed play, the Gorloks added an insurance run in the eighth when Adam Naliwajko (SO, Mt. Prospect, IL/St. Viator HS) doubled, took third on a groundout, and scored on a Golich bunt.
Lord, who went 4 2/3 innings, picking up the win, gave way to Uhrich in the eighth. Lord gave up two hits and a walk, no runs, and struck out six. Uhrich retired the final six MacMurray batters, striking out the last five in a row for his first save of the season. Uhrich has thrown 7 1/3 innings on the season, giving up one hit, no earned runs and striking out 10.
Thomas was 3-5, with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Thomas has 28 RBIs on the season, making him second on the team to Uhrich's 36. Golich was 2-5, with a double, RBI, and run scored, and Naliwajko was 3-4 with a double and run scored.
The Gorloks host Washington University for a single game on April 14 at GCS Ballpark. Webster then travels down Big Bend to play at Washington University on April 17 for a single game as well.
