Gorlok Comeback Prompts Panther Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Propelled by a five-run inning, the Webster University softball team came from behind to beat Greenville College (IL), 5-3, in game two of a doubleheader at Blackburn Park on April 15.  Webster was shut down in the opener, 9-1, but the Gorloks battled to beat the Panthers, who entered the contest with only one loss in the SLIAC, in the nightcap..

In the game two victory, the Gorloks struck for five runs in the fourth inning after trailing, 3-0.  Erin McGinnis (JR, Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS) had a leadoff double.  Laura Zeegers (JR, Oviedo, FL/Leon HS) followed with an infield hit and a Kaylyn DeCock (JR, Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf HS) single to center scored McGinnis.  Tessa Johanning (FR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) singled  to center also, scoring Zeegers.

Katlyn Garza (FR, O'Fallon, MO/Ft. Zumwalt North HS) singled to score DeCock, with Johanning and Garza moving up on the throw home.  Chelsea Thornley (FR, Clinton, MO/Clinton HS) singled to score two more to give Webster a 5-3 lead.

Paige Prather (JR, Evansville, IN/Central HS) had taken over on the mound in the top of the fourth for Webster.  After allowing a lead off hit, Prather retired the next 11 batters in a row before giving up a pair of two-out hits in the seventh.  Prather retired the final out on a grounder to third to pick up the victory.  Prather gave up three hits and no runs over four innings, and struck out two.  She is 4-1 on the season and owns half of the Gorloks' victories.

Alexis Spriggs (SO, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) started for Webster.  Greenville took a 3-0 lead in the first on four singles and a walk.  In the Greenville third, a double, walk, and infield hit loaded the bases with none out.  But Spriggs pitched her way out of the jam, getting a pop up to second, a second to home force out, and another grounder to second, to keep the score at 3-0.  Spriggs went three innings, giving up seven hits, three runs, two walks, and striking out two.

Johnanning wound up 3-3, with a double, RBI, and run scored.  DeCock was 2-3 with an RBI and run scored, and McGinnis was 2-2, with a double, stolen base, and run scored.

Johanning started game one for Webster.  She allowed home runs to the Panthers in each of the first three innings as Webster fell behind, 6-0.  Johanning would go three innings, gave up six hits and six runs, only four earned.   Chloe Costa (FR, Frisco, TX/Frisco HS) took over in the fourth on the mound.  She would go three innings also, giving up six hits and three runs, one walk, and struck out two.

Webster scored its lone run in the fifth.  A bunt single by Costa, and a double down the left field line by Emily Kolisch (SO, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) brought Costa all the way around to make it 6-1.  Greenville turned a walk and three hits into three more runs in the sixth off of Costa for the 9-1 final, in six innings.

Kolisch was 1-2, doubling in Webster's only run.

Webster is 6-10 in the SLIAC and 8-21 overall.  The loss in game two was just the second of the season in the SLIAC for Greenville, who is 8-2 in conference and 17-11 overall.

The Gorloks host Eureka College on April 18 for a doubleheader at Blackburn Park.  That is Webster's last scheduled home date for the season.
