Baseball Cages Panthers, 6-0 & 11-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Using a power punch and speed on offense, and two stellar starting pitching efforts, the Webster University baseball team won a doubleheader at Principia College, 6-0 and 11-1, on April 18.  C.J. Lee had a shutout and Jeff Kammer and Kyle Uhrich each banged two home runs, extending the Gorloks win streak in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to 10 games.

In game one, Lee (SO, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS)  threw a complete game, seven-inning shutout.  Lee gave up just two hits while striking out a season-high 12 in the contest.  He improved to 3-1 on the season while lowering his earned run average to 3.05.

The Gorloks scored five of their six runs via the long ball.  In the Webster first, Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) hit a solo home run to give the Gorloks a 1-0 lead.  In the Webster third, with two down, Blake Thomas (JR, Troy, IL/Triad HS) was hit by a pitch and Kyle Uhrich (SO, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS) doubled.  Kammer followed with a three-run clout, his seventh of the year, to make it 4-0.

Uhrich joined the long ball parade as he hit a solo home run in the fifth, giving Webster a 5-0 lead.  In the Gorloks' seventh, Thomas was hit by a pitch a second time, stole second and third, and scored on a Kammer single for the 6-0 final.

Kammer was 3-4, with two home runs and five RBIs.  Uhrich was 2-4, with a home run, double, two runs scored and an RBI.

The Gorloks had an impressive two-day power surge.  Counting the last two innings the previous day against Washington University, Webster had five home runs in a seven inning stretch.  But the Gorloks weren't done going deep on the day yet.

Josh Fleming (FR, Columbia, IL/Columbia HS) got the start in game two.  He wound up going  5 2/3 innings, giving up eight hits, one run, a walk, and striking out eight.  Fleming is 4-2 with a 2.47 earned run average on the season.  Fleming got ample run support from the Gorlok offense, which broke a 27-year old team record with 12 stolen bases in the game.  Webster's larceny eclipsed the 11 bases stolen in a game vs. Parks College on March 26, 1988.

Dylan Radjkovich (JR, Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg HS) walked in the second inning, stole second, and Adam Naliwajko (SO, Mt. Prospect, IL/St. Viator HS) reached on an error.  Rajkovich and Naliwajko pulled off a double steal and a Matt Wollnik (SO, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) sac fly scored Radjkovich. Jake Celleghin (JR, Westfield, IN/Westfield HS) was out on bunt but scores Naliwajko to give Webster a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Thomas reached on error and Uhrich walked.  Thomas stole third and scored on a Kammer sac fly to make it 3-0.  Uhrich hit a solo home run in the fifth, his 13th, tying him with Joe Biagnini (2009) for third on the Webster all-time single season home run list.  Radjkovich was hit by a pitch, stole second, and Naliwajko walked.  Wollnik followed with his second home run of the season, a three-run shot, to put the Gorloks up 7-0.

Principia scored a run in their half of the third, but the Gorloks got it back in the sixth.  Uhrich and Kammer back to back doubles made it 8-1.  In the Webster eighth, Alec Bahnick (SO, Owensboro, KY/Owensboro Catholic HS) and Zach Allam (JR, Bloomington, IN/Bloomington HS) walked, and a Zack Moberg (FR, Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South HS) pinch-hit double scored Bahnick.  Allam would score on a wild pitch, giving Webster an 11-1 lead.  After Principia was retired in their half of the eighth, the game was called on the 10-run rule.

A succession of Gorlok relievers finished up for Fleming.  Jack Bensinger (SR, Los Angeles, CA/Campbell Hall), Joe Elfrink (SO, Leopold, MO/Leopold HS), and Mitch Stefani (JR, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS) finished up for the Gorloks.

Uhrich was 2-4 with a home run and double, stolen base, and two RBIs.  He was 4-8, with two home runs, two doubles, and three RBIs on the day.  Uhrich now has 44 RBIs on the season and is tied for 10th on Webster's all-time single season list.  Wollnik was 1-4, with a home run and three RBIs, and Thomas was 1-3, with three stolen bases, two walks, a double, and two runs scored.  Radjkovich had three steals, Naliwajko had two, Mike Golich (FR, Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) had two and Celleghin had one.

Webster is 12-3 in the SLIAC and 23-9 overall.  The Gorloks have an interesting week, completing a postponed game vs. Greenville College on April 21 at GCS Ballpark.  The game will pick up in the bottom of the fourth with Webster leading, 6-2.  On April 22, Webster travels to Normal, IL, to take on Illinois State University, an NCAA I school that is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference.
