Redbirds Overpower Gorloks, 13-3

Box Score The #27 ranked Webster University baseball team took on NCAA I Illinois State University and fell, 13-3, on April 22, in Normal, IL.  The Redbirds, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, used an seven-run seventh to break open the contest.

Webster had a 3-0 lead in the sixth, but two big innings by Illinois State doomed the Gorloks.   The wheels fell off for the Gorloks in the ISU sixth.   Starter Isaac Behme (SR, Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg HS), who had given up just five hits in the first five innings, gave up a leadoff triple and single.  After a one out double, Dylan Dean Smith (SR, Albion, IL/Edwards County HS) relieved.

Smith walked a batter to the load bases, and a fly to right scored the Redbirds second run.  Josh Fleming (FR, Columbia, IL/Columbia HS) relieved Smith.  A two-base error by the Gorloks allowed two more runs to score and a single sent another home as the Redbirds took a 5-3 lead.

Illinois State raked four Gorlok relievers for seven runs in the seventh.  Chris Jansen (SR, Cicero, IN/Bishop Chatard HS) took over to start the seventh.   After Illinois State loaded the bases on two hits and a walk with two down against Jansen, Trey Tigart (SO, Sikeston, MO/Sikeston HS) took over on the mound.

Tigart balked in a run to put the Redbirds up, 6-3.  Tigart walked the next batter to load them up and Johnny Lord (SO, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) was called on and walked three straight runs in to put ISU up, 9-3.  Jack Bensinger (SR, Los Angeles, CA/Campbell Hall relieved Lord but couldn't stop the onslaught as a double scored two more, making it a seven-run frame for the Redbirds.

Webster took a lead in the first as Mike Golich (FR, Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) walked and Jake Celleghin singled.  With two down, Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) doubled to left field to give Webster a 2-0 lead.

In the Gorloks fifth, Celleghin walked and with one out, stole second.  After Kyle Uhrich (St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS) walked, Kammer singled to left center, scoring Celleghin to make it 3-0.

When ISU added one more run in the eighth, giving them a 10-run lead, that made it a 13-3 final.  Seven different relievers finished up for the Gorloks after Behme's departure.  Illinois State came into the contest at 19-18.  Webster, ranked #27 in latest ABCA/Collegiate Baseball poll, fell to 24-10 with the loss.

Behme went 5 1/3 innings, gave up eight hits, one walk and two earned runs, while striking out seven.   Smith took the loss and he is 5-3 on the season.   Kammer was 4-4, with three RBIs and a double.  He is now batting .364 on the season.  Celleghin was 2-3, with a walk and two runs scored.

The Gorloks get back into St. Louis Intercollegiate Conference play as they host Eureka College (IL) for a weekend series on April 25-26 at GCS Ballpark.
