Box Score 2 The #27 ranked Webster University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Eureka College (IL) on April 26 at GCS Ballpark. The Gorloks won 13-4 and 40-4, improving to 15-3 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Webster offense powered up for a second straight weekend, teeing off for eight home runs, and setting the school record for runs and hits in a single game in the nightcap.
The 40 runs broke the school record set in 2008 in a game at Lincoln Christian College, when Webster scored 33. The Gorloks' 31 hits also set a single game record, topping the 26 hits in a game vs. Eureka in 2010.
A sixth run fourth inning broke open the game one, 13-4, win for the Gorloks. Dylan Rajkovich (JR, Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg HS) and Mat Wollnik (SO, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) singled, and Charlie Gandolfi (SR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) had a bunt single to load the bases. Mike Golich (FR, Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) singled in two, with Gandolfi out trying to take third. Max Fecske (SO, North Hollywood, CA/Notre Dame HS) singled in Golich but was thrown out trying to advance
Blake Thomas (JR, Troy, IL/Triad HS) hit his second straight home run for Webster's fourth run in the inning. Kyle Uhrich (SO, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS) followed with his 14th home run, and Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) made it back to back to back HRs with a towering fly over the left field wall. It was Kammer's eighth on the season Rajkovich had a ground rule double before Eureka finally retired the Gorloks, but Webster had a 9-4 lead.
Webster took a 1-0 lead in the first. Golich doubled and Fecske singled him in. In the Webster second, Wollnik tripled and Golich grounded out to score him for a 2-0 lead. In the Gorlok third, Thomas had a leadoff HR, off the office building beyond the left field wall. It was Thomas' first of the year and made it 3-0.
Eureka plated four runs in the fourth inning. A walk by starter C. J. Lee (SO, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS), and a triple made it 3-1. A hit batter and single cut the lead to 3-2, and a Red Devil double scored two more and chased Lee. Dylan Dean Smith (SR, Albion, IL/Edwards County HS) relieved and got the third out with one pitch. Eureka was up 4-3 but Webster would grab the lead back with its six-run fourth.
The Gorloks added four more in the fifth. A single by Gandolfi and double by Golich made it 10-4. Fecske singled to score Golich and make it 11-4. Thomas singled for Webster's 20th hit of the game, and Uhrich singled in Fecske, but was thrown out at second trying to advance. Thomas took third on the play and scored on an error at first on a ground ball by Kammer, giving Webster a 13-4 lead.
Smith went 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win and is 6-3 on the year. Smith gave up two hits, no runs, and struck out one. Joe Elfrink (SO, Leopold, MO/Leopold HS) pitched a scoreless sixth inning, and Zach Schneider (SR, Grayslake, IL/Warren Township HS) finished up with a scoreless seventh. Lee went 2 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on three hits and a walk.
Thomas was 3-4, with two home runs, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Fecske was 4-4, with three RBIs and Golich was 3-5, with four RBIs, two doubles, and three runs scored. Kammer was 3-4 with a home run and two RBIs, and Uhrich was 2-4, with a home run and two RBIs.
Golich started the Gorlok offensive barrage in game two's 40-4 win in the first with an inside the park home run. Fecske reached on an E7 and Thomas and Uhrich walked to load the bases. Kammer singled in Fecske and an E4 on Rajkovich scored Thomas. Adam Naliwajko (SO, Mt. Prospect, IL/St. Viator HS) singled in Uhrich and Kammer, and a wild pitch brought Rajkovich home to make it 6-0.
Wollnik walked and Naliwajko scored on a sac fly by Gandolfi. Golich had a bunt single and Fecske singled home Wollnik to make it 8-0. A Thomas single loaded the bases once again, still with only one out. A Uhrich sacrifice fly to right scored Golich. Kammer was hit by a pitch to load the bases back up. Rajkovich had a single to right to plate two more and give Webster an 11-0 lead after one inning.
Uhrich's second home run of the day highlighted a four-run second. Wollnik, Gandolfi, and Connor Hogan (SO, New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way West HS), pinch-hitting for Golich, all walked to load the bases. The infield fly rule was called on a pop up by Jake Celleghin (JR, Westfield, IN/Westfield HS), but an E4, allowed all runners to advance, scoring Wollnik. After Aaron Meyer (FR, New Haven, MO/Washington HS) flew out, Uhrich hit his NCAA III leading 15th home run, a three-run job, to make it 15-0.
Eureka nicked starter Josh Fleming (FR, Columbia, IL/Columbia HS) for a run in the third but the Gorlok offense cranked it back up in the fourth inning.
Hogan doubled in Alex Bahnick (SO, Owensboro, KY/Owensboro Catholic HS). Meyer singled into center, scoring Hogan. Kammer followed with his second home run of the day, a three-run shot over the right center field fence, to make it 19-1. For Kammer, it was his ninth home run of the season. That ties him for the sixth most home runs in a single season for the Gorloks.
Webster added 15 more runs in the fifth to surpass the school record for a single game. A force out by Celleghin scored the first. An error on Meyer scored another, and a hit off the third base bag by Uhrich scored a third run. Kammer hit a ground rule double for two more to make it 23-1. Mike Wick (FR, Bartlett, IL/Bartlett HS) singled in Uhrich for a run and, after Naliwajko was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Ryan Fischer (JR, Manchester, MO/Parkway South HS) drove in another with a single.
Bahnick cleared the bases with a double to make it 28-1. Hogan doubled in Bahnick, Celleghin walked, and Meyer hit a pop up that was dropped as Hogan scored to make it 30-1. Dylan Dean Smith pinch hit for Kammer and singled into right for his first career hit, scoring Celleghin. Wick walked to load the bases and Naliwajko singled to center, giving Webster a 32-1 lead. Fischer singled in Smith and Naliwajko to set the new Webster scoring record, with 34 runs.
Hogan doubled in the sixth and Meyer hit his first collegiate home run to make it 36-4. It was the Gorloks eighth home run of the day. Zach Schneider had his first career hit, batting for Smith. Naliwajko and Fischer both singled in runs, Bahnick drove in a run with a force out, and Hogan singled in #40.
Zack Pawlowski (JR, Mundelein, ILMundelein HS) took over for Fleming in the sixth, and Taw Frederickson (JR, Foosland, IL/Fisher HS) pitched the seventh. Fleming gave up four hits and one run in his five innings of work, striking out three and improving to 5-2 on the season.
Gorlok batters put up pinball type numbers. Kammer was 3-4 with a home run, four RBIs, a double, and three runs scored. Naliwajko was 3-6, with three RBIs and three runs scored. Uhrich was 2-5 with a home run, five RBIs, and four runs scored. Uhrich's 15 home runs ties him for the second most all-time in a single season for Webster. His 52 RBIs is the fifth highest total in a single season for the Gorloks.
Hogan was 4-4, with three doubles, three RBIs, four runs, and two walks, Fisher 4-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored, Bahnick 3-5, with four RBIs and three runs scored, and Meyers 3-5, with a home run and four RBIs, all of them coming off the bench.
Webster completes the series with Eureka with an 11:00 a.m. game on April 27 at GCS. The Gorloks then finish the regular season with a weekend series vs. Fontbonne University on May 1-2. Webster plays a single game at Fontbonne on May 1 and hosts a doubleheader on May 2 at GCS.
