Prather Provides Relief, Gives Gorloks Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Behind a stellar relief performance by Paige Prather, the Webster University softball team split a doubleheader at Westminster College, losing the opener 5-0 and taking the nightcap 3-2, in eight innings, on April 6 in Fulton, MO.

The Gorloks scored in three of the final three innings to come from behind in their win.  Westminster had taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning off Webster starter Alexis Spriggs (SO, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) and Prather was summoned to start the fourth.  After giving up two singles and a walk for a run, Prather settled down, retiring 10 of the next 11 batters she faced, with the only runner reaching on an error.

Meanwhile, the Gorloks slowly tied the game up.  Katlyn Garza (FR, O'Fallon, MO/Ft. Zumwalt North HS) led off the fifth with a walk and was sacrificed to second with a bunt by Kristin McIntyre (SO, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS).  With two down, pinch-runner Chelsea Thornley (FR, Clinton, MO/Clinton HS) scored as Alyssa Sapp (JR, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS) reached on an error to make it 2-1.  In the sixth, Laura Zeegers (JR, Oviedo, FL/Leon HS) had a leadoff double and scored on a single by Tessa Johanning (FR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) to tie it up, 2-2.

In the eighth, Sapp was placed at second base to start the inning per college fast pitch rules for extra innings.  With two out, Kaylyn DeCock (JR, Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf HS) singled down the left field line to score Sapp and give Webster a 3-2 lead.

With a runner place at second in the Blue Jay eighth, Prather walked the first batter, setting up a force at second ant third.  She got the next batter to ground into a force, 6-5, and the second batter flied out to left.  Prather got out of the inning unscathed by coaxing a foul pop up to Garza at first.

Prather wound up going five innings, giving up two hits, two walks, one run, and struck out two.  She improved to 2-1 with the victory.

Johanning was 2-4 with an RBI and DeCock was 1-4 with an RBI.  Zeegers was 1-3 with a double and run scored and Sapp was 1-4 with a stolen base and run scored.

In the Gorloks' 5-0 loss in the opener, Garza was 2-3 in the game and Sapp finished 2-4.  Johanning started on the mound for Webster and went 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits, two walks, and four earned runs.  Johanning struck out four while taking the loss.  Chloe Costa (FR, Frisco, TX/Frisco HS) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings to close out the game for Webster.  She gave up no hits and two walks.

Webster is 3-7 in the SLIAC and 5-18 overall.  The Gorloks are scheduled to host Illinois College in a doubleheader at Blackburn Park on April 8.  They then travel to Elsah, IL, on April 9 to face Principia College for a doubleheader as well.
