Baseball Clinches SLIAC West W/ 3-0 Win Over Griffs

Fleming Throws Second Shutout

Box Score The #22 ranked Webster University baseball team beat Fontbonne University, 3-0, at Shaw Park in Clayton, clinching the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Western Division in the first year of its inception.  The Gorloks improved to 9-1 in the division, and 17-3 overall in the SLIAC.  Josh Fleming threw his second shutout of the season in the victory.

Fleming (FR, Columbia, IL/Columbia HS) got the start for Webster, improving to 6-2 on the season with his second shutout.  Fleming lowered his earned run average for his freshman campaign to 2.07, while striking out 12 and giving up just four hits and no walks.  Fleming now has 75 strikeouts in 65 1/3 innings pitched.  Fleming is tied with Isaac Behme (SR, Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg HS) and Dylan Dean Smith (SR, Albion, IL/Edwards County HS) for the team lead with six wins.

Webster took a 2-0 lead in the third when Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) reached on an error and Dylan Rajkovich (JR, Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg HS) doubled.  Adam Naliwajko (SO, Mt. Prospect, IL/St. Viator HS) grounded out to short with Kammer scoring and Matt Wollnik (SO, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) followed with a double to drive in Rajkovich.

The Gorloks added an insurance run in the eighth when Blake Thomas (JR, Troy, IL/Triad HS), who had reached on an error, scored on a a balk.

Wollnik wound up 2-3, with two doubles, an RBI, and a walk.  Rajkovich was 1-4, with a double and a run scored.

The SLIAC split baseball into two divisions in 2015, with the top two teams in each six team division earning spots in the postseason tournament.  Westminster College entered the evening 9-3 in second place in the West, and the worst Webster could finish is at 9-3 also, but the Gorloks have the tie-breaker over the Blue Jays sweeping them earlier this season.

Webster, ranked #22 in the latest ABCA/Collegiate Baseball and #24 in the latest d3baseball.com polls, is 28-10 overall on the season.  The Gorloks finish the regular season with a doubleheader with Fontbonne at GCS Ballpark on May 2.  The SLIAC tournament takes place on May 7-9 at Greenville College, in Greenville, IL.  Webster will face either face Spalding University (KY) or host Greenville in first round play.
