Gorloks’ World Series Ends With Loss To Ramapo

Box Score For the second straight day, a big inning by the opposing team doomed the Gorloks, as the Webster University baseball team lost to Ramapo College (NJ), 14-2, on May 23, in Appleton, WI.  The loss ousts Webster from the 2015 NCAA III Championships 'World Series'.

The Roadrunners broke the game wide open when they added eight runs to a 6-2 lead in the sixth inning.  A leadoff single and HBP put runners on board.  Reliever Dylan Dean Smith (SR, Albion, IL/Edwards County HS) threw wide to third on a sacrifice bunt attempt, with one run scoring and the runners winding up at second and third.

A double off the left field wall brought both home and a single off a diving shortstop Matt Wollnik's (SO, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) glove scored a fourth run.  After another HBP and run-scoring single, Smith was done for the day.  C. J. Lee (SO, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS) and Matt Goro (SO, Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) both relieved, with two more Roadrunners scoring as they took a 14-2 lead.

Ramapo had jumped on top, 4-0 in the second inning.  A double, single, and an error on Webster starter Isaac Behme (SR, Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg HS) loaded the bases with none down.  Behme caught the next batter looking and a sac fly brought home one run for the Roadrunners.  But a three-run homer by Ramapo's Brandon Berger made it 4-0.

Ramapo increased its lead to 6-0 in the third.   After a leadoff single, the next two batters were retired, including a diving catch in the right center gap by Dylan Rajkovich (JR, Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg HS).  But another gapper to right center by Ramapo's Scott Peschianai reached the wall and he circled the bases for a two-run inside-the-park home run.   After a Ramapo single, with the runner being picked off, and a walk, Smith was called on to relieve Behme.  Smith got a groundout, 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

Rajkovich got Webster on the board with a leadoff solo home run in the fifth, his fifth of the season and second in the NCAA Championships.  The Gorloks picked up another run in the sixth when Blake Thomas (JR, Troy, IL/Triad HS) doubled with one down, and was singled in by Kyle Uhrich (SO, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS).

Webster had a chance to add more when Connor Hogan (SO, New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way West HS) followed with a double to put runners at second and third with one down, but both were stranded.  It was Uhrich's 63rd RBI, making him second on Webster's all-time single season list, second only to Victor Valdez' 70 RBIs in 2010.

Behme wound up going three and a third innings, giving up six runs, only two earned, on six hits and a walk, and a strikeout.  He was 6-6 on the season.  Behme finishes his distinguished career as the Gorloks' all-time leader in wins, strikeouts, games started, and innings pitched.  Smith, second in career wins for Webster, ended his stellar career for the Gorloks on the mound as well.  The MVP of the Central Regional, Smith was 8-3 with a 2.13 ERA on the season.

Goro finished up for the Gorloks, going two and a third innings, giving up four hits and no runs.

Rajkovich was 1-3, with a home run, RBI, and run scored.  Uhrich was 1-4 with an RBI and Hogan was 1-2 with a double.  Thomas was 1-4 with a double and run scored.

It was the final game in a Webster uniform for seniors Behme, Charlie Gandolfi (Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS), Chris Jansen (Cicero, IN/Bishop Chatard HS), Zach Schneider (Grayslake, IL/Warren Township HS), and Smith.

Ramapo (33-15) advances and will play the winner of the SUNY-Cortland St./Frostburg St. game.

Webster, the SLIAC regular season champs and NCAA III Central Region Champions, ends the year 34-15 overall.
