Gorloks and Panthers Battle To 2-2 Tie In 2 OT

Box Score The Webster University men's soccer team opened play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 2-2 tie to Principia College (IL), in double overtime, at the Soccer Park on September 26.  The Panthers took a 2-1 lead late, but the Gorloks sent it into overtime with a goal by Jake Stowers with 28 seconds remaining.

In the second half, after Webster goalie Zach Horn (JR, Godfrey, IL/Alton Marquette HS) had made a couple big stops, Principia finally broke through at 74:01.  On a broken play in front of the Webster goal, the ball squirted free to a Principia forward, who buried it to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.

The Gorloks kept the pressure on over the final 15 minutes.  Webster had chances on a free kick just outside the Principia box, and several corner kicks, but couldn't covert a game tying-goal until a crossing pass by Drew Quisenberry (FR, Morton, IL/Morton HS) to Stowers (JR, St. Louis, MO/St. Louis CC), who scored his first Webster goal with 28 seconds remaining to tie the game.

Webster kept the pressure on in the overtime sessions, but couldn't score.  The Gorloks outshot the Panthers 7-0 in the overtime periods and 19-9 for the game.  The game was a fairly 'chippy' event, with seven yellow cards being issued, four to Principia and three to Webster.  Principia also had 25 fouls to Webster's 15 in the contest.

Webster took a 1-0 lead over Principia on a Zach Gyuricza (FR, Chicago, IL/St. Viator HS) goal on a penalty kick at 37:28 in first half.  For Gyuricza, it was his third goal of his freshman campaign.  Up to that point in the game, the Gorloks looked to have the upper hand, outshooting the Panthers 3-0.  But Principia came alive after falling behind and tied it up a few minutes later on a free kick at the 40:10 mark.  The teams entered halftime tied at 1-1.

Horn earned the tie in goal, facing nine shots and making two saves.

Webster is 0-0-1 in the SLIAC and 1-6-2 overall with the tie.  Principia 0-0-1 in the SLIAC and 0-5-1 overall.

The Gorloks make the short trip down Big Bend Boulevard to face Washington University on September 29 at 7:00 p.m.  The Bears (5-1-2) are ranked #18 in the latest NSCAA NCAA III national poll.  Webster is back home on October 3, facing Eureka College (IL) in another SLIAC match-up.
