The Webster University men's basketball team defeated Principia College (IL), 70-63, on January 26 at Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks and Panthers had another hard-fought contest that has become the rivals hallmark in recent years.
The Panthers led in the early going, leading as much as eight, but the Gorloks went on an 7-0 run to cut it to 29-28. Webster took the lead with two minutes left in the half, 34-33, and went into the locker room up 39-36. Freshman Evan Milligan (Evansville, IN/Evansville Central HS) led the charge with 13 points, on 5-6 shooting, and seven rebounds.
Tevin Evans (SR, St. Louis, MO/Chaminade HS) and Rabassa Turner (JR, Memphis, TN/St. Benedict @ Auburndale HS) both came off the bench to score nine and eight points, respectively. Evans was 3-3 and Turner was 3-4 as the team shot 15-28 (53.6%) from the field.
Webster extended its lead in the second half to eight before Principia got within one, at 56-55, with 9:33 left. A Principia three-pointer at 3:59 gave the Panthers the lead at 63-62. Adam Etter (JR, Albers, IL/Mater Dei HS) canned a basket from just inside the arc to put Webster back on top at 3:00.
A steal and a layup by C.J. Moore (JR, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian HS) at 1:45 gave the Gorloks a three-point lead. Etter was fouled at :25.5 and hit both free throws to give the Gorloks a five-point lead and the game.
Milligan finished with team-highs in points at 15, rebounds with 12, and had five blocks. He was 6-8 from the field. Adams, Evans, and Turner all finished with 11 points in the contest.
Webster wound up shooting 27-56 (47.8%) from the field and was 7-20 (35%) from the three-point line.
The Gorloks are 6-5 in the SLIAC and 9-9 overall. The Gorloks travel to Eureka, IL, to play Eureka College on January 30. Webster is back home on February 3 to face Blackburn College (IL).
