Gorloks Outlast Red Devils, 65-56

In a game near closely played as possible for three periods, the Webster University women's basketball team pulled away in the game's final minutes to secure a 65-56 win over Eureka College (IL).  The victory, on January 4 at Grant Gymnasium, gave the Gorloks a 3-1 record in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and a three-game win streak.

The Gorloks and Red Devils were tied after the first and second periods, and were separated by just two points heading into the fourth. But Webster outscored Eureka, 13-2, over the fourth period for the win.

Webster and Eureka were tied at the end of the first period, 21-21, as the Gorloks went 4-8 from the three-point line.  Kelsey Miller (SO, Elizabeth, IN/South Central HS) had two of the threes and had seven points in the period.  The Gorloks took a 29-21 lead to open the second period but the Red Devils came back to tie the score at the half, 38-38.  In a tightly played half, both teams only had six turnovers combined.

Things got a little sloppy in the third period as both teams combined for 12 turnovers.  Webster ended the period down, 54-52, but opened the fourth with a 6-0 run to go up, 58-54.  The Gorloks forced 10 more Red Devil turnovers in the fourth, picking up six steals.

A trio of Gorloks led in the victory.  Nadine Vaughn (JR, Pana, IL/Pana HS) had a team-high 15 points on 6-8 shooting, including 3-4 from the three-point line.  Vaughn had seven rebounds as well.  Miller had 12 points, a team-high eight rebounds, and added four assists.  Taylor Lucas (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) had 14 points and a team-high five assists.

Webster is now 6-5 overall on the season.  Eureka falls to 2-2 in the SLIAC and 3-8 overall.

The Gorloks are right back in action at Grant on January 4 vs. Fontbonne University.  Webster is home on January 9 vs. MacMurray College (IL) and ends a four-game homestand with a game vs. Westminster College on January 13.
