Winning its fifth straight game, the Webster University women's basketball team defeated MacMurray College, 83-56, on January 9 at Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks improved to 5-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with the win.
The Gorloks led, 5-0, to start the game but a Highlander 9-2 run gave MacMurray the lead. Webster responded with a 6-0 run to lead after the first period, 15-11. Nadine Vaughn (JR, Pana, IL/Pana HS) paced Webster with nine points in the frame.
MacMurray tied the score at 21-21 with 5:25 left in the second period but the Gorloks dominated play the final five minutes, winding up with a 37-27 lead at the half. Ashley Brooks (SR, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) and Aley Lucas (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) came off the bench to spark Webster, scoring six and eight points, respectively. Webster shot 16-32 (50%) for the half and held a wide margin in rebounds, 23-12.
Webster continued to dominate play in the third period, extending its lead to 19 in the first four minutes, 48-29. The Gorloks finished the period up, 59-44. Webster kept the pedal to the medal in the fourth, outscoring MacMurray 24-12 for the 83-56 final.
All 16 available Gorloks saw the floor in the game, with 14 landing in the scoring column. Webster shot 32-69 (46.4%) for the contest and wound up with a 44-28 advantage on the boards. The Gorloks had 13 steals in the game.
Vaughn had a team-high 16 points for the game, shooting 6-8 from the field, grabbed six rebounds, and had four assists. Brooks finished with 15 points on 7-10 shooting for the game and Aley Lucas had 10 points. Taylor Lucas (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) had a team-high eight rebounds and chipped in with six points.
Webster is now 8-5 overall on the season. The Gorloks finish a four-game homestand with a game vs. Westminster College on January 13 at Grant Gym. Webster will head to Louisville, KY, on January 19 to take on Spalding Univeristy.
