Juniors Alex Whalen and Nermin Hajrizi pumped in two goals apiece to pace the Webster University men's soccer team to a 5-2 win Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks toppled Iowa Wesleyan University in Mount Pleasant, Iowa to improve to 2-0 in SLIAC play and 4-6 overall.
Â
Webster got going in a hurry, as Whalen (JR, St. Louis, MO/Parkway Central) and sophomore Zach Gyuricza (SO, Chicago, IL/St.Viator) each buried a goal within the game's opening nine minutes. The contest remained at 2-0 until the 36th minute, as the Tigers pulled within one. Iowa Wesleyan then evened the scoreline a minute before halftime.
Â
But the Gorloks played a strong second half to run away from the Tigers. Hajrizi (JR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) tallied his first goal of the year, and the eventual game-winner, in the 61st minute. He added his second of the game just seven minutes later. Whalen scored his second goal, his fourth of the season, and the Gorloks' fifth goal of the day in the 81st minute.
Â
Senior Brendan Shields (SR, St. Peters, MO/Ft. Zumwalt East) picked up two helpers by assisting on both of Whalen's goals. Junior Lucas Wittrock (JR, House Springs, MO/Northwest) earned an assist on Hajrizi's second tally.
Â
Freshman Kyle Hertel (FR, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint) made a pair of saves to earn the victory. He is now 2-2 on the season.
Â
Up next for Webster is a SLIAC showdown with Westminster College (Mo.) in Fulton on October 5. The Blue Jays, 5-2 overall and 1-0 in conference action, were the preseason favorite in the SLIAC coaches' poll. Westminster defeated Webster 2-1 in last year's SLIAC Tournament championship. Kickoff for the Webster-Westminster game is slated for 7:00 p.m.
