Late Goal Lofts Blue Jays Over Gorloks, 1-0

The Webster University men's soccer team lost at Westminster College, 1-0, on October 5 in Fulton, MO.  The game was scoreless until the Blue Jays found the net with just over six minutes remaining in regulation.  The loss tightens up the race in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the men.

The game was scoreless at the half, 0-0.  Webster goalie Kyle Hertel (FR, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint) grabbed a loose ball in the goalie box before it could be punched in at the 24 minute mark and the Blue Jays put the pressure on late in the half but couldn't score.  Westminster outshot Webster, 13-4 in the half.

The Blue Jays scored the game winner at 83:27 in the second to secure the win.  Westminster outshot Webster, 9-2, in the second half and 22-6 for the contest.  Hertel had three saves, allowing just the lone goal, and fell to 2-3 on the season.

The Gorloks and Blue Jays have developed quite a rivalry in recent years as both teams have jostled for first place in the SLIAC.  In 2015, Westminster and Webster finished 1-2 while in 2014, Webster took the top spot with Westminster in second.  In 2013, both teams tied for first place with Fontbonne, and in 2012, Webster once again took the top spot with Westminster in second.

Webster leads the overall series in the SLIAC vs. Westminster at 21-15-2, starting off 11-1 after the formation of the SLIAC.  But Westminster has held a 14-10-2 edge since the 2000 season.

Webster is now 2-1 in the SLIAC and 4-7 overall.  Westminster is 2-1 in the SLIAC also, and 6-3 overall.  Spalding University (KY) holds down the top spot at 2-0 and Blackburn College is at 2-0-1 in second place, a half game ahead of the Gorloks and Blue Jays.

The Gorloks have a home game vs. MacMurray College on October 8 at the Soccer Park.  Webster has a week off then before travelling to Elsah, IL, on October 15 to face Principia College.
