Griffins Shut Down Men's Soccer, 3-0

In a showdown of two teams battling for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crown, the Webster University men's soccer team lost to Fontbonne University, 3-0, on October 22 at the Soccer Park.  The loss put the Gorloks two back on the loss side in the tight SLIAC race.

The teams battled to a scoreless first half, with Webster holding the edge in shots, 4-1.  Neither team had a great opportunity to score as play was tight for the period.  That kind of play continued through the early going in the second half as each team only had one shot after 15 minutes of play.

But Fontbonne broke the 'monotony' with a goal at 62:22 on a nifty through ball that put a Griffin forward one on one with Webster goalie Kyle Hertel (FR, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint) just outside of the right side of the goal box.  He slipped it past Hertel for the first goal of the game.  The Griffins scored an insurance goal on a bomb off a free kick just outside the Webster box at the 73:00 mark.  Hertel could only watch as the ball sailed just under the crossbar.

Fontbonne left no doubt about the outcome with a third goal at 85:20 on a backwards header from the endline to a Griffin in the goal box, who tapped it in for a 3-0 lead.  Hertel allowed made two saves while taking the loss in the game as his season record is now 3-4.

The Gorloks entered the game at 4-1 in the SLIAC and fell to 4-2 in the conference and 6-8 overall.  Fontbonne is now 6-1 and 7-9-1 overall.

The Gorloks will host another contender for the SLIAC crown, Spalding University (KY), who is leading the SLIAC at 7-0, on October 25.  Webster then has a make-up game with Blackburn College (IL) on October 27 at the Soccer Park.
