In a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown, the Webster University women's soccer team won the battle of the unbeatens as it defeated Fontbonne University, 2-1, on October 22 at the Soccer Park. Brianna Pagan scored the game winner with just 2:40 left in the contest as the Gorloks stand alone in first at 6-0.
Fontbonne entered the contest at 6-0 in the SLIAC, with Webster at 5-0. The victory gives the Gorloks sole possession of first with three games remaining in conference play.
Pagan corralled a ball in the Griffin goal box to score her second goal of the season at the 87:20 mark in the second half for the winner. Jillian Zimpfer (FR, St. Louis, MO/St. Charles) lofted a shot from outside the penalty box that deflected off Melissa Kasper (FR, Chicago, IL/Oswego) to Pagan. Kasper was credited with an assist.
The Webster offense had put the pressure on during the second, after a 1-1 first half. The Gorloks had outshot the Griffins, 12-2, before Pagan's goal. Webster outshot Fontbonne 23-4 in the game
Webster opened the scoring with a goal by Alli Ferguson (SR, Highland, IL/Highland) at 13:30 in the first half. Ferguson scored on a deflection off the Griffins' goalie's hands on a corner kick by Carolyn Ries (SO, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville). It was Ferguson's team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Just over 10 minutes later, Fontbonne scored in a similar fashion, with a corner kick being poked by Webster starting goalie Aly Miller (FR Middleville, MI/Thornapple) to tie the game at 1-1. That turned out to be one of just two shots for the Griffins in the half as Webster had a 10-2 edge going into the break.
Alisa Coralic (SO, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) took over in the nets in the second half for Webster and shut out Fontbonne the rest of the way for her second win of the season. She is now 2-2 on the year.
It was Senior Night for the women's soccer team as the Gorloks recognized four seniors. Honored in a pre-game ceremony were Kelli Cardine (Chicago, IL/DeKalb), Ferguson, Jodi Kaiping (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo), and Lauren Nuelle (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy).
Webster is 6-0 in SLIAC and 8-7 overall. Fontbonnne is 6-1 and 10-6-1 overall.
The Gorloks will host another contender for the SLIAC crown, Spalding University (KY), who is also 6-1 in the SLIAC, on October 25. Webster then has a make-up game with Blackburn College (IL) on October 27 at the Soccer Park.
