Win At Westminster Pushes Women's Basketball To 7-1

The Webster University women's basketball team won its fourth straight as it defeated Westminster College, 76-64, on December 10 in Fulton, MO.  The win makes the Gorloks 2-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and gives them a 7-1 record to start the season, tying for the best start in team history.

The Gorloks jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first period, and led, 15-9, with 1:29 left.  Webster went on a 7-0 run to widen its lead to 22-9 to end the period.  Webster led by as many as 20 points in the second period before settling for a 49-32 lead at the half.

Once again the Gorlok pressure defense dictated play as the Blue Jays committed 16 turnovers in the half, with Webster scoring 14 points off those turnovers.  Webster shot a healthy 18-33 (54.5%) for the half, including 5-10 from the three-point line.  Taylor Lucas (JR, Sullilvan, MO/Sullivan) and Kelsey Miller (JR, Elizabeth, IN/South Central) each had 10 points.  Megan Brandt (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan) had nine points and a team-high five rebounds.

In the third period the scoring pace slowed as Webster maintained its comfortable edge, once again leading by 20 at one time.  Westminster managed to shave the lead to 14 at the end of the third, 61-47.  A three-pointer by Ebony Bailey (JR, Dolton, IL/Seton Academy) to open the fourth put Webster back up by 17, 64-17, and took the air out of any Westminster hopes for a comeback.  The Blue Jays managed to cut a little more into the lead but it was too little too late as the Gorloks won 76-64.

Despite going cold from the field in the second half, shooting 10-36 (28%), and 0-8 from the three-point line, Webster warded off Westminster with its defense.  The Blue Jays wound up with 27 turnovers as the Gorloks had 16 steals.  Webster also shot 15-18 (83%) from the free throw line.

Taylor Lucas and Brandt wound up high-scorers for Webster with 13 points each.  Lucas shot 6-9 from the field while Brandt hit 6 of 11 shots.  Brandt pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for the game while Lucas had eight.  Jade Sawyer (FR, Republic, MO/Springfield Republic) had nine points, four steals and three assists.

The 7-1 start by Webster ties for its best start in team history, when the 2001-02 squad also jumped off to a 7-1 record.  Westminster falls to 1-2 in the SLIAC and 2-7 overall.

The Gorloks have a week off before hosting Eureka College on December 17 at Grant Gym.
