The Webster University women's basketball team remained in the hunt for a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament berth with a 60-43 win over MacMurray College on February 10 in Jacksonville, IL. Webster got off to a slow start, but MacMurray wilted under the Gorloks' pressure defense in the second half.
The Gorloks made it a little hot under the collar, heading into the locker room tied with the Highlanders at 29-29. Webster shot 29% to MacMurray's 50% from the field, but still were even. The Gorlok defense heated up in the second half, limiting the Highlanders to only four baskets in 25 attempts (16%) while Webster outscored them, 31-14. Webster also wound up forcing 26 MacMurray turnovers in the contest and finished the game with 13 steals.
Webster shot much better in the second half (11-26, 42.3%) and MacMurray didn't help itself at the free throw line, canning only six of 18 attempts.
Taylor Lucas (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) tied for the team-high with 11 points and had a team-high eight rebounds. Brittany Harris-Conway (SR, St. James, MO/John F. Hodge HS) had 11 points also and grabbed four rebounds. Kelsey Miller (SO, Elizabeth, IN/South Central HS) also hit double figures with 10 points. Freshman Megan Brandt (Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) had six points, seven rebounds, and two blocks in the contest.
Webster has won three straight and is now 9-6 in the SLIAC, tied with Spalding University (KY) for fourth place in the conference. The Gorloks are 12-10 overall.
Webster travels to Fulton, MO, to take on first place Westminster College on February 13. The Gorloks are home on February 17 when Spalding visits Grant Gymnasium.
