Webster Keeps Pace With Win at Westminster, 70-62

The Webster University men's basketall team had a much-needed road win, 70-62, at Westminster College, on February 13 at Fulton, MO.  The Gorloks, who are in a battle for a berth in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament, strenghtened their position in the league standings with the victory.

While on paper the game was mostly statistically even in regards to shooting, rebounding, and turnovers, one stat that stands out is at the free throw line.  The Gorloks canned 22 of 32 attempts to the Blue Jay's 13 of 17.  Webster shot 41.2% as opposed to 41.5% for Westminster and the Gorloks had a slight edge in rebounds at 37-32.  Turnovers were pretty much dead even at Webster's 10 vs Westminster's 11...but it all added up to a big Webster win.

Webster came into the contest at 8-7 in the SLIAC, tied for fifth with Spalding University (KY) and Blackburn College (IL).  The Blue Jays were in a tie for third at 9-6 with Iowa Wesleyan University.  Combined with a Blackburn upset at Iowa Wesleyan, and a Spalding loss at MacMurray College (IL), Webster finds itself in a four-way tie for third place with Westminster, Blackburn, and Wesleyan at 9-7.  The Gorloks have two games remaining, both home games vs. Spalding and Wesleyan.

At Fulton, the Gorloks sprinted to a 27-13 lead in the first 10 minutes of the contest and had a 34-27 lead at the half.  Webster fended off a couple of Westminster runs and maintained its lead for the duration of the second half.

Hunter Ward (JR, Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood HS) had team-highs with 16 points and eight rebounds, both his team-leading season averages.  Ward also had a team-high three steals.  Rabasa Turner (JR, Memphis, TN/St. Benedict at Auburndale) had 12 points and seven rebounds.  Evan Milligan (FR, Evansville, IN/Evansville Central HS) had 11 points and seven rebounds, and added three blocked shots.

C.J. Moore (JR, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian HS) and Xavier Dortch (JR, Stockton, AL/Faulkner State CC) each hit double figures in points also, at 12 and 11 respectively.  Moore had a team-high three assists.

Webster is 9-7 in the SLIAC and 12-11 overall with the win.  Westminster is now 9-7 and 9-14 overall.

Webster will be home on February 17 to host Spalding, and on February 20 vs. Iowa Wesleyan at Grant Gymnasium.  Those two games will conclude the Gorloks' regular season play.
