Women's Basketball Bids Seniors Adieu

The Webster University women's basketball team made a valiant third period comeback, only to see it slip away in the game's final seconds as it lost to Iowa Wesleyan, 57-56, on February 20, at Grant Gym.  It was somber end to Senior Day as Webster said goodbye to three Gorloks, including two four-year players.

Down at the half, 35-26, the Gorloks' shooting hit an extra gear in the third period, as Webster went 8-12 from the field, including 3-4 from the three-point line.  Webster outscored Wesleyan, 21-10, as it grabbed a 47-45 lead entering the fourth.  The Gorloks' pressure defense forced seven Tiger turnovers in the period.

Webster still led, 56-55 with :20 remaining when Wesleyan came up with a loose ball on the possession arrow.  The Tigers ran the clock down and hit a layup with 2.5 seconds left in the contest.  The Gorloks got off a desperation heave at the buzzer that missd its mark.

After back and forth action in the first period, Webster trailed, 15-13, as the Gorloks hit 5-9 shots.  Webster continued to shoot well in the second, going 5-9 as well, but still trailed at the half, 35-26.  Though the Gorloks canned five three-pointers in the half, the Tigers hit on eight and Wesleyan had a big advantage on the boards, outrebounding Webster 15-4.

Senior Ashley Brooks (Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) led Webster with 14 points on 5-8 shooting, including  4-7 from the three-point line.  Fellow seniors Brittany Harris-Conway (St. James, MO/John F. Hodge HS) had nine points and Alyssa Sapp (Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS) had six points and a team-high five assists.  Nadine Vaughn (JR, Pana,IL/Pana HS) had 10 points.

Webster shot 49% (22-45) on the afternoon and were 9-19 (47%) from the three-point line.  Webser forced 21 Wesleyan turnovers and committed just 11 of their own, but the Tigers dominated the boards, holding a 29-13 advantage.

Webster finished 9-9 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 12-13 overall.  Iowa Wesleyan wound up 13-5 in the SLIAC, and is 18-7 overall, but are not eligible yet for postseason play in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks recognized their three seniors, who played their final game in a Webster uniform, in a pre-game ceremony.  Ashley Brooks wound up appearing in 73 games and finished her career sixth in three-pointers, 14th in assists, 15th in steals, and 20th in points on the Webster all-time high list.  She was named to the SLIAC All-Academic Team two years.
