Women's Basketball Sprints By Blackburn, 80-42

The Webster University women's basketball team ran past the Blackburn College Beavers, 80-42, on February 3 at Grant Gymnasium.  The Gorloks pressed their way to a 19-6 first period lead and dominated the rest of the way for the win.

Webster forced 11 turnovers and had nine steals in the first period, as the Beavers offense was dammed up by the Gorlok pressure.  Webster scored 12 points in the frame off turnovers.  Blackburn cut the lead to 21-12 in the second, but Webster ran it back up to 30-12 before settling for a 32-14 halftime lead.  Webster wound up shooting 14-31 (45%) in the first half.

The Gorloks forced 12 more turnovers in the second period and tacked on seven more steals for 16 total in the half.  Webster would have its second highest total of steals in a game on the season, finishing with 22 in the contest.  Defensively, the team set a season-high for blocked shots in the game with seven.

The third period saw Webster continue to increase its lead as its advantage ballooned to 31 points, at 51-20, just halfway into the session.  The Gorloks ended the third period up, 65-27, before rolling to its 80-42 final.  The Gorloks shot 29-59 (49.2%) in the game, its third highest shooting for the season.

All seventeen available players saw action in the contest for Webster, with 14 breaking into the scoring column.  Brittany Harris-Conway (SR, St. James, MO/John F. Hodge HS) led Webster with 13 points on 6-7 shooting.  Aley Lucas (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) had 11 points off the bench and Alyssa Sapp (SR, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS) had 10 points, five steals, three assists, and two rebounds coming off the bench as well.  Kennedy Hartman (JR, Sidney, IL/Unity HS) had a team-high five rebounds and three blocked shots, adding three assists and two steals.

Webster improves to 7-6 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 10-10 overall.  Webster has a 10-game winning streak vs. Blackburn, dating back to 2011.

Webster continues the 'Battle of Big Bend' on February 6 as the team makes the trip down Big Bend Boulevard to take on Fontbonne University.  On February 10, the Gorloks travel to Jacksonville, IL, to face MacMurray College.
