Baseball Opens SLIAC Play 2-0 With DH Win At Eureka

The Webster University baseball team opened play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a pair of wins, 12-2 and 4-0, at Eureka College.  Webster was picked to finish first in the West Division in the SLIAC coach's preseason poll.

Solid starts by Jack Bensinger and Trey Tigart shut down the Red Devils, as both picked up the wins for the Gorloks. 

In game one, Webster took a 1-0 lead in the top of second on a Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) solo homer, but Eureka took 2-1 lead in the bottom half when starter Bensinger (GR, Los Angeles, CA/Campbell Hall) was tagged for two runs.  Webster scored a run in third to tie it up, 2-2, on a Blake Thomas (SR, Troy, IL/Triad HS) sac fly.

The Gorloks added another run in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead as Adam Naliwajko (JR, Mt. Prospect, IL/St. Viator HS) doubled home Dylan Rajkovich (SR, Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg HS).  Doubles by Kyle Uhrich (JR, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS), Kammer, and Jake Milosch (FR, St. Charles, IL/St. Charles East HS), sandwiched around a triple by Thomas plated three runs in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. 

A six-run seventh inning by the Gorloks blew open the contest for the 12-2 final.  Seven Gorloks reached base in the frame.  For the game, Uhrich was 4-5 with three doubles, had two RBIs, and scored two runs.  Thomas was 2-5 with a triple and three RBIs, and Kammer was 2-5 with a home run and a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored.  Naliwajko was 2-3 with a double and two RBIs.  Webster had seven doubles in the game.

Bensigner would up going 5 2/3 innings, giving up four hits, two walks, and two runs, while striking out eight.  Bensinger is now 3-1 on the season.

In game two, a two-out single by Thomas and a triple by Kammer staked Webster took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.  Webster scored single runs in the fourth and seventh to extend the lead to 4-0.

Tigart (JR, Sikeston, MO/Sikeston HS) went six innings for the win, scattering four hits, walking none, giving up no runs, and striking out 11.  Tigart evened his season record at 1-1.  Johnny Lord (JR, Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley HS) threw the final three innings for the save, giving up no hits, one walk, and no runs. 

Thomas was 2-3 with an RBI and run scored.  Kammer was 2-4 with a double and triple and an RBI.

Webster starts 2-0 in the SLIAC and evens its season record at 8-8.  The Gorloks finish the three-game series on March 21at Eureka, then will host MacMurray College on March 26 at GCS Ballpark for a doubleheader.
