Gorloks Trump Tigers, Make It 11 In A Row

The Webster University softball team extended its winning streak to 11 games with a 9-1, 11-0, sweep of Iowa Wesleyan University, on April 23 in Mt. Pleasant, IA.  Improving its record in the SLIAC to 10-6, the Gorloks high-powered offense continued to roll as they received two good starting efforts on the mound.  Both games ended after five innings on the eight-run rule.

Chelsea Thornley (SO, Clinton, MO/Clinton HS) had a five-inning complete game in the opener, giving up five hits, one walk, and a run, while striking out three.  She improved to 6-5 on the year with the win.  After giving up her run in the Tigers first, she got all the support she would need in the Gorlok second.

Sidney Coleman (JR, Fredericksburg, VA/Fountain-Ft. Carson HS) reached on a walk and Erin McGinnis (SR, Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS) reached on a fielder's choice with everyone safe on an E1.  Kayla Day (JR, Caruthers, CA/Caruthers HS) walked to load the bases and Kaylyn DeCock (SR, Bettendorf, IA/Betterdorf HS) singled in Coleman.  Karissa Cardenas (JR, Henderson, CO/Prairie View HS) singled home McGinnis and Kate Sullens (JR, Highland, IL/Highland HS) doubled, scoring DeCock and Cardenas for a 4-1 lead.

The Gorloks added two runs in the fourth and a three-run fifth gave them an eight-run lead.  RBI singles by Katlyn Garza (SO, O'Fallon, MO/Ft. Zumwalt North HS) and Cardenas were the big hits in the fourth.  When Thornley retired the Tigers in the fifth, the eight-run rule ended the contest.

Cardenas was 2-3 with two RBIs and a run, and Sullens was 1-2 with two RBIs, a double, two walks, and a run scored.  DeCock was 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and McGinnis was 2-3 with two runs scored.

Alexis Spriggs (JR, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) had a five-inning shutout in game two, giving up just two hits and two walks.  Spriggs won her sixth game also and lowered her season earned run average to 3.75.  Webster took a 2-0 lead in the first after doubles by Sullens and Coleman, and a single by McGinnis.  But the big blow was a grand slam homer by Tessa Johanning (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) in the third inning to make it 6-0.  It was Johanning's first collegiate home run.

Webster scored five more runs in the top of the fifth, on just three hits, to make it 11-0.  Spriggs retired the Tigers in the fifth and once again the Gorloks had an eight-run rule win.

Johanning was 2-3 with the grand slam and five RBIs, and scored two runs.  McGinnis was 3-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Coleman was 2-3 with a double, three runs scored, and a walk.

Webster edges over the .500 mark to 16-15 on the season.  The 11-game win streak is the Gorloks longest since the 2002 season.

The Gorloks complete their weekend trip to Iowa with a doubleheader vs. Coe College in Cedar Rapids on April 24.
