The Webster University softball team saw its 11-game win streak come to a halt with a pair of losses at Coe College, 5-1 and 7-2, on April 24 in Cedar Rapids, IA. The Gorlok's high-powered offense couldn't get untracked against the Kohawks.
In game one, starter Tessa Johanning (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) had given up just one run in the first three innings but she got into a jam in the fourth. The Kohawks had a pair of singles sandwiched around a Gorlok error to load the bases. A double cleared the bases and after the next batter singled, Paige Prather (SR, Evansville, IN/Evansville Central HS) was summoned to relieve. Prather got a ground out and a fly out, that turned into a double play as Sidney Coleman (JR, Fredericksburg, VA/Fountain-Ft. Carson HS) threw a runner trying at the plate.
In the seventh inning, Coleman was hit by a pitch and Johanning doubled her home for Webster's only run. Johanning took the loss, giving up five hits, five walks, and five earned runs in three innings. Prather threw three scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk. Kate Sullens (JR, Highland, IL/Highland HS) and Johanning were both 1-3 with a double in the game.
In game two, the Gorloks took a 1-0 lead in the first. With two out, Carol Ann Weiler (SO, St. Peter's, MO/Ft. Zumwalt East HS) and Coleman singled, with a single by Johanning scoring Weiler. Coe scored in its half of the first to tie the game and added two more in the second and third off Webster starter Alexis Spriggs (JR, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS), to take a 5-1 lead.
The Gorloks got one of those back in the fourth when Johanning and Kaylyn DeCock singled to lead off the inning and Katlyn Garza (SO, O'Fallon, MO/Ft. Zumwalt North HS) doubled Johanning home. But the Kohawks responded with a solo home run in their half of the fourth and led, 6-2. Webster would be shut down the rest of the way as Coe would score one more, in the sixth, for a 7-2 final.
Spriggs would go four innings, allowing eight hits and six runs, only three earned, and took the loss. Prather went the final two innings, giving up four hits and a run.
Johanning was 2-3 with an RBI and run scored, and Garza was 1-3 with a double and an RBI.
The Gorloks are now 16-17 overall on the season. Webster travels up Big Bend Avenue to take on Washington University on April 28 for a doubleheader in Clayton, MO.
