Blue Jays Sweep Gorloks

The Webster University softball team dropped a doubleheader to Westminster College, 7-5 and 11-4, on April 5 at Blackburn Park.  The Blue Jays came from behind in the opener via the long ball, and grabbed and held an early lead in the nightcap.

In game one, a Sidney Coleman home run put Webster on the board in the second and the Gorloks took a 3-1 after Emily Kolisch (JR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) and Kayla Day (JR, Caruthers, CA/Caruthers HS) singled in the fifth.  A Katelyn Johnson (JR, Cambridge, IL/Woodstock HS) double would plate Kolisch and pinch runner Sydney Bierman (FR, Knob Noster, MO/Knob Noster HS).  But a Blue Jay five-run sixth, powered by a three-run blast off Webster reliever Chelsea Thornley (SO, Clinton, MO/Clinton HS), gave Westminster a 6-3 lead.

The Gorloks would score two of their own in the sixth, but the Blue Jays added an insurance run in the seventh for the 7-5 win.  Tessa Johanning (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) started for Webster and went 5 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits and seven walks.  Johanning fell to 2-3 on the season.

Coleman was 1-4 with a home run and RBI, and Karissa Cardenas (JR, Henderson, CO/Prairie View HS) was 2-3 with two RBIs.  Johnson was 1-4 with two RBIs and a double.  Carol Ann Weiler (SO, St. Peter's, MO/Ft. Zumwalt East HSO was 2-4 with a double and Kolisch was 2-2 with two runs scored.

In game two, Westminster had three singles in a double in the first inning off Webster starter Alexis Spriggs (JR, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS).  Webster got one of those back in the third but Westminster would score two runs in the fifth and sixth to give them a 9-1 lead.  The Gorloks chipped away at the lead with three runs in their half of the sixth.  One out singles by Kolisch, Day, and Cardenas all led to runs as Webster cut the deficit to 9-4

But the Blue Jays ended any hope with two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh for the 11-4 final.  Spriggs went 4 2/3 and gave up six runs as she fell to 1-5 on the season.

Cardenas was 2-3 with an RBI and run scored and Kolisch was 2-3 with a run scored and walk.  Coleman was 1-3 with a double, walk, and run scored.

Webster is 2-4 in the SLIAC and 5-13 overall.  Westminster is 2-2 in the SLIAC and 9-12 overall.  Webster is at Fontbonne University for a doubleheader on April 8 and travels to Carlinville, IL, to face Blackburn College on April 9 for a doubleheader.
