The Webster University baseball team closed out the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season with a sweep at Blackburn College, 11-3 & 13-1, on May 6 in Carlinville, IL. The Gorloks clinched the best overall record in the SLIAC at 18-4, as Kyle Uhrich broke Webster's career home run record with his 28th round-tripper.
The conference best record gives Webster the #1 seed in the SLIAC baseball tournament, taking place on May 12-14 in Greenville, IL. Webster had finished first in the West Division at 10-2. The Gorloks take on host Greenville College in the first round on May 12. Greenville finished second in the East Division at 8-4 and was 15-7 overall in the SLIAC.
Uhrich (JR, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS) would reach the top of Webster's career home run list with a blast in the first inning of the Gorloks' 13-1 win in game two. Uhrich has 11 home runs on the season and 28 total in his two years at Webster. Uhrich broke a tie with Webster Hall of Famer Andrew Fuiten (2008-09), who had 27 dingers in just two seasons. Uhrich was the NCAA III leader in home runs in 2015 with 17. Uhrich wound up the day 7-10, with six RBIs, a home run, double, and four runs scored.
In the
game one 11-3 win, Josh Fleming (SO, Columbia, IL/Columbia HS) won his fourth game in five starts. He struck out 12 Beavers in just six innings of work, walking none and giving up five hits and three runs. Fleming improves to 4-0 on the season. Blackburn took a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Gorloks scored the next 24 runs in the twinbill. Webster scored three in the fourth, one in the fifth, and broke it open with six in the sixth, powered by a grand slam by Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) .
Uhrich was 5-5 in the game and Kammer 2-4 with his grand slam. It was Kammer's seventh home run of the season and his 24th career swat, tying him for third on Webster's all-time list with Craig Schaefer (2008-11). Kammer would take over third place by himself with his eighth homer in the nightcap. Kammer finished the afternoon 4-8, with eight RBIs, two home runs, a double, and four runs scored.
Blake Thomas (SR, Troy, IL/Triad HS) was 3-3 with an RBI, walk, and run scored. Matt Wollnik (JR, Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley HS) was 2-3 with three RBIs, a double, stolen base, and walk, and Mike Golich (SO, Aurora, IL/Aurora West HS) was 3-4 with a stolen base and run scored. The Gorloks had 18 hits in seven innings.
Jack Bensinger (SR, Los Angeles, CA/Campbell Hall) got the start for Webster in
game two, throwing five scoreless innings in the 13-1 win. He gave up two hits and struck out five while improving to 8-2 on the season and lowering his ERA to 1.75.
Uhrich hit a two-run homer in the first and the Gorloks added two more in the second to lead, 4-0. Kammer hit his homer, a three-run job, in the fourth as Webster added four more for an 8-0 lead. Webster added two more runs in the fifth and sixth, and a single run in the seventh for a 13-0 bulge. The Beavers got on the scoreboard in the seventh, breaking up the shutout with a single run.
Uhrich was 2-4 with the home run and four RBIs, and Kammer was 2-4 with a home run, double, and four RBIs. Uhrich and Kammer also moved up the Webster career list in RBIs with their big afternoons. Uhrich now has 109 at Webster and Kammer is at 108, placing them sixth and seventh on the Gorloks' all-time RBI list.
Mike Wick (SO, Bartlett, IL/Bartlett HS) became the second Gorlok on the day to go 5-5. He had a double, stolen base, RBI, and four runs scored as he raised his team-leading average to .374. Brandon Smith (JR, Imperial, MO/Seckman HS) was 2-4 with an RBI, stolen base, walk, and two runs scored. Jake Milosch (FR, St. Charles, IL/St. Charles East HS) was 3-3 with a double, and Thomas was 2-4 with an RBI. Webster had 19 hits in the game and 37 total in 14 innings on the afternoon.
Webster is now 26-13 on the year and will finish its regular season with a single game at Rose-Hulman Institute, on May 8 in Terre Haute, IN, then turn its attention to the SLIAC tourney. Information on the SLIAC 2016 Baseball Tournament can be found
