Men's Soccer Opens With 2-0 Loss To #24 Wash U

The Webster University men's soccer team dropped its opener to Washington University, 2-0, on September 1, at the Soccer Park.  The Gorloks will be right back at it on September 3 at the Soccer Park when they host McMurry University from Texas.

The Bears, stocked with nine returning starters and four All-Region players, were #24 ranked nationally in the NCAA III in the NSCAA preseason poll, and advanced to the second round of 2015 NCAA III Championships.  The Gorloks, who have 12 freshman and are coming off an 8-3 finish to the 2015 season, were looking to establish themselves in 2016.

Washington U scored at the 38:06 mark in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room.  The Bears added an insurance goal at 54:58 in the second half.  Freshman newcomer Kyle Hertel (FR, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint) had three saves in goal for the Gorloks, who were outshot 18-3 in the contest.

Despite a tilted score last season, the Gorloks and Bears have battled it out over the last few years.  Webster lost 2-1 in 2014 and 2011, with a 1-1 tie sandwiched in between in 2013.

The Gorloks host McMurry at 7:00 p.m. on the 3rd, then travel to Memphis, TN, on September 10-11 to face host Rhodes College and Hendrix College (AR).
